Cool. I like all the photos. It would be neat (a lot of work for you , but neat) to put together a complete discography for Jerry Byrd, and host it on your website.
Of course, maybe I just think that because my mind's still on what tracks he played on on that Hank Williams CD.

Nice Job Ray, I enjoyed reading the stories and looking at the pictures. I would love to hear some very early JB, when he was just getting started on simple C6 and playing country. Thanks... |

For those of you wanting to HEAR some of Jerry Byrd's early work, DEPENDING UPON WHICH BROWSER your computer has.....you can hear some of these songs on this site.
Right now, Harbor Lights is on page #1 and I believe page #3 has an early tune recorded by Pete Cassel with JB's early day magical sounds. I plan to change these selections from week to week or month to month, depending on the interest shown.
These tunes are from my own collection and are not intended for downloading but rather your personal listening pleasure. Most of these are out of date and many of the artists are deceased.
Hope you like it.
TRAVIS: I've been researching thro' all of the old JB fan club journals produced by Millie Annis, and have been constructing a detailed TIME LINE of virtually every happening in Jerry's musical career; the serious auto accident he was injured in, etc.
Hopefully, I can make that available to all one day in the future. I believe you'd find it most enlightening.[This message was edited by Ray Montee on 10 January 2004 at 09:57 AM.] |

George, I believe your 100% Correct.
I was going to caption it as such but had a moments lingering doubt as to my accuracy so rather than error......I chose to omit.
Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. |

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the nice journey! Brings back a
lot of pleasant memories. I used to be a member of Jerry's Fan Club, probably in the late 50's or therabouts.
The Bigsby and the Rickys are fine looking instruments.
The sound clips of Jerry playing; ,,,,, great idea and sure to bring me back.
I am curious to know what appreciable difference in tone (sound), you find when
comparing those 10 Ricks. I assume you have both prewar models and post?
You did a great job.
Regards,
Roy |

Ray, that site sure brought back some old thoughts about the old days. Looks like we are about the same age, which I wont divulge. It's a great site, and really enjoyed your own history.

This thread has renewed my life long appreciation of Jerry Byrd, so I've been playing his albums again.
In doing so I was surprised to learn from the album notes from the "Byrd Of Paradise" LP, that at the time it was recorded, Jerry being born and bred in Ohio, had never set foot on any of the Hawaiian Islands. However, his home was decorated in the Hawaiian motif and he hungarily read everything he could find of Polynesian lore and history. It was years after that before he visited the Islands for the first time.
An interesting fact about a person who for me just to hear his name simultaneously brings visions of Hawaii to me.

Jeff...With respect, I am not sure of your age. I do know that I am an old phart of 75 and will be 76 in March.
Were you around the Waikiki scene in 1970 ? I was there for a month on my first of 22 visits. I can tell you I found only three "working" steel guitarists that year. One, whose name I stupidly did not get, was playing at the Halekulani "House Without a Key" with Ray Kinney and his trio, another was Barney, and the third one I found was Pua Almeida playing at the Moana. There may well have been others to be heard...but where the heck were they ? I couldn't find anyone! Rock and Jawaiian were the BIG thing in Waikiki at that time and it was a real disappointment not to hear a lot of nahi-nahi Hawaiian music on my first visit which was 2 years BEFORE Jerry hit the scene from his Nashville roots. In the years since Jerry appeared, (1972), the steel guitar has become more visible due directly to the efforts of Jerry... Alana Akaka, Greg Sardinha, Casey Olsen, et al. I honestly feel Hawai'i came mighty close to losing its' instrument were it not for the efforts of one Jerry Byrd. |

Ray....I think the bit that Jeff was referring to is quote: It was then, in around 1972, that Jerry Byrd left for Hawaii, the land where steel guitar was born. By this time however, Hawaii had essentially turned-its back on the steel guitar, the very instrument that for so long had been synonymous with Hawaii.
During the years that have followed Jerry Byrd has created a rebirth of interest in this beautiful instrument
Recordings from that era would seem to suggest otherwise.

I think Joe Goldmark says it best in his "Steel Guitar Discography":
"We all know that Jerry's heart is in Hawaii. I choose to list him in the C&W section because of his early work in Nashville, and because he's a great ambassador of Hawaiian music and non pedal playing to the uninitiated."
The operative word being "uninitiated". I think JB is great, but there was a long line of steel playing in Hawaii, and I doubt it just disappeared. JB was also a student of this rich tradition. |

Yes Jeff, I am fully aware Hawaiians don't own hotels...sadly, they hardly "own" Hawai'i anymore. All I was trying to point out was simply, Waikiki is where the majority of employment can be found for musicians and, during the 1970 era, very few steel guitarists were being employed. Hawaiians of course, are not interested in cellophane hula skirts, ('nor am I). Tourists could give a damn about what is considered to be Hawaiian music back then and even today. 90% of them have no interest whatsoever in Hawaiian music as such, 'nor do most realize it even exists. They certainly don't come to Hawai'i to hear a steel guitar ... most young ones head off to the nearest beach or Rock joint. The fact remains, since his arrival in Hawai'i, the efforts of Jerry Byrd dramatically increased the presence of the steel where it rightfully belongs.
