Does anyone out there know the pros and cons of 40s versus 50s dual profs and customs? Were any changes made? I got a day to decide on this guitar
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33039&item=3702311809&ssPageName=STRK:MEBDW:IT

The seller made an offer to me which I have a day to act on. Any comments on this guitar? I know price may be a tad high being that it has been cut up a little.

Thanks a bunch!

Kayton Roberts uses an early '50s ('51, I think ), and it sounds great.

Jody Carver is who you need to talk to...he's the omniscient oracle when it comes to Fender!

Kayton Roberts gets amazing tone! Must be the red paint. I thought I'd read something about changes in pickups between the 40's and 50's. Wonder if this guitar was pre- or post-change. Oh omniscient oracle...What do you think?

I question it being an "early" 40's guitar. Me thinks it is closer to the early fifties, possibly "late" forties. Only Jody would know with a certainty. As for the Customs being less desireable than the Stringmaster, I don't think so. All depends on the type of music you like to play. For Hawaiian, give me the Custom anytime.

I happened to see this and I'll take a guess

1952 maybe 51 The blue flocking was discontinued after early i952.If you lift the tuning head pan it might have the name
Tadeo G. and the date it was completed. Serial # may be in the 1600 hundreds.

I'm not Mandrake the Magician but I will make
a bet on the looks of it I am close.

I dont beleive that Stringmaster will be more
valuable than the Custom. There are fewer Dual Pros out there than Stringmasters and as George implied they have a great Hawaiian tone. I would refer to the Dual Pro and Trap
pickups as having a fuller bodied sound with
everything anyone would want. Those trap pickups have been sold on E bay for over $150.00 each add your case and the rest of that Fender and you got a good deal. Forget the holes in the head its a great guitar. I have holes in my head and I'm still here.

My choice would be what you see..

Thank You Jeff and George for your making me
a magician.

Karnak BUY IT NOW. Here come the critics
Bring em on Tadeo G. stands for
Tadeo Gomez one of Leo's finest workers.
Plus its Walnut and thats a sweet sounding guitar....here they come I see you won that auction Gibson.Im curious let us know what the serial # is and the name under
the pan.

Thanks for everyone's input. It all is qutie helpful. Jody, so glad to hear from you. I'll look into the serial # and name under keys. I think I already know your opinoin if I had the chance at a Custom instead of a DP. What finishes did Fender put on the Custom. Did they ever make a Sunburst or a Walnut?

Gibson
Fender produced blonde and walnut Customs and
Dual Pro guitars. All walnut guitars were discontinued in 1954.

Good luck with your new guitar.

I stay on the side most of the time, reading but still respond to my many friends by email.I like the history of the guitar that someone tried to put a pedal on it.This reminds us that many had to get that new pedal sound after SLOWLY.If I wanted it the hole would not matter. If the guitar sounds good play it and realize this is one of the finest steels ever made.
