Anyone have a good solution to clearing your throat before singing.
Sometimes this time of year especially the old sinuses do their draining thing (snot throat) and it makes it hard to sing. |

Although I'm not a smoker, being in a smoke-filled room does a good job drying out my sinuses.
Guess that's the only thing they're good for. (The cigarettes, not the smokers).
I can imagine how sinuses could get in the way of singing. If the stuff's draining down your throat, then it literally 'gets in the way'.
But even worse than that, to me, is a stuffy nose. Not being able to breathe through your nose totally affects your tone of voice, and makes singing nearly impossible. |

I have been suffering with the throat clearing thing for 9 months. It started as a cold, morphed into a horrific cough, and now it's the clearing thing. Has cost me a lot of work, I am in the process of recording a new CD and sometimes I have to cancel cause I just can't sing. Anyhoo, the doc thinks I may have asthma. I always thought asthma was a kid's disease, but adults get it a lot. My band mate, who now lives in Seattle, said he has had asthma since he was a kid, and he uses 3 asthma drugs twice a day and they have cleared it up. I hope I can find a combo that works for me. Perhaps you have asthma. There are five signs of it: cough, throat clearing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest constriction. It is best to cough when you need to clear your throat because clearing literally grinds your vocals chords and can make you hoarse. I know. Sometimes, especially when you are singing, you run into some kinda crap, and coughing just won't get rid of it. It's a drag no matter what. |

I use a bottle of non bubble water with:
a teaspoon of honey
2 slices of lime or lemon dropped in
and in a very smokey room a hit of tabasco.
Shake and sip all night.
This gives you a natural expectorant clearer; lemon,
some smoothness ; honey
and something strong to chase the post nasal drip if needed ; the capsicum pepper
Combined with water it also helps drain your system of the things that cause dodgey throats.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 30 November 2005 at 06:17 AM.] |
