When I was a kid in New Mexico, this song was very popular on the radio. Does anyone recall who sang it?
Thanks,
Erv |

It is an old Joe Turner blues favorite but Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys with Tommy Duncan on vocal and Leon McAuliffe on steel got a hold of it in the 1930s and it became a Western swing classic forever. I play that as well as many more recent versions of that great tune on my "Swingin' West" radio show at www.swinginwest.com

The song was copyrighted by Robert Jones,a New Orleans piano player. But it's origin is widely credited to the Mississippi Sheiks, the 30's jug band that also gave us "Sitting On Top Of The World."

Whenever I hear the song, I think of Red Foley! Didn't he also record the song?

I'm thinking Hank Snow had a recording of it also. Ray

Hank did record it. It's probably been recorded by many if it was researched. |

Erv,
It has just been recorded and is in the beautiful new CD by The Gimbles. Johnny, his son Dick and Dick's daughter (Johnny's granddaughter) Emily. Emily does the vocal on "Trouble In Mind." Unfortunately there is no steel on the CD but Johnny plays a wicked fiddle and there are so many other good players like Floyd Domino, Danny Levin, etc. It is very popular on my "Swingin' West" show.

Title of that album is "A Case of the Gimbles"
The version I first heard was the Cosmonutts featuring Jimmy Dale Gilmore. |

I suppose everyone has a favorite cut of this tune. One that I did not see on Walt's list is by Tom Morrell and the TWTH from the UPTOWN album.
Terrific vocal by Leon Rausch accompainied by incredible riffs, rides and solos as only Tom, Leon C. and gang can do it. If you love "dinosaur" music like I do, you'll definitely appreciate their treatment of this classic. |

Jerry,
Thanks for letting me know, I overlooked the Tommy Morrell version, have to update my database!
I also found a version by "Jerry Irby & The Texas Ranchers" - I bet there are a lot of other versions around...
Kind Regards, Walter
