This is a magnum opus for Mr. Cooder, I love all his stuff, and this one is brilliant. It is a "theme" record about the displacement of a poor but vital Hispanic neighborhood in LA in the early 50's which was razed to make way for Dodger's stadium. He covers the topic from all angles, en espanol y ingles. It is simply a wonderful record and IMHO, his best work. Check it out. |

Thanks for the heads-up Bunky. I read a very good review of it in a paper over here a while back also, so it's on my "must buy" list.

I think it's pretty good so far, but I need to listen to it more before having a firm opinion. I really liked Mambo Sinuendo, his previous release, but this is a fine CD so far. I wish it included more of his guitar playing, but that's just me.

It's like a musical documentary of how big money interests win against the interests of homeowners and residents in the game of civic planning in mid-century Los Angeles.
.....Progress? ... for whom?
I think it's a great album, not only for the music, but for the message it conveys.
After hearing it and reading the booklet, i felt like I had just seen a good thought provoking movie. |

I like the record very much, and I can't help thinking how much Ry reminds me of Rickie Lee Jones in "Poor Man's Shangri-La".
And damn, if Jim Keltner isn't one of the baddest drummers on Earth, I don't know who is.[This message was edited by Mike Neer on 27 June 2005 at 06:06 PM.] |

I've been reading good reviews on this. I've always enjoyed Cooder's music. Keltner's on it? That cinches it for me. Gotta buy it.

I'm a huge Ry fan from way back.
I know artistically this is a fine work-I got it the day it was released a couple of weeks ago but haven't listened to it much yet.
It's going to take me ahwile to give it my overall rating.
I long for the days of some of the classic Ry albums where his guitar and vocals are really out front, but I have heard through a variety of sources that he hasn't been interested in that sort of thing in many years.
Hence the movie soundtracks and special projects like Buena Vista Social Club, Mambo Sinuendo, and now Chavez Ravine.
I'm just going to have to keep listening to this one so that I can try and get onto "the same page" as the man.

Shoot! I missed that Nightline. I'm going to have to see if there is anyway to get that segment off the internet.
