| After seeing the recent PBS special on the Mammas & the Papas I did a little surfing and came up with this interesting article on how the 60's anthem California Dreamin' was recorded. Who knew jazz great Bud Shank played the flute solo? Great article. I always wished I had access to Mr. Peabody's "Wayback Machine," so I could stop in at different sessions to see how everything went down. To see the Wrecking Crew in action, wow. I love good harmonies, and the Mamas and the Papas sure delivered. (Brian Wilson and company didn't do too bad in that department either.) Jimbeaux, right again. I can't help but think, during those moments of sadness in the dark of night, that if Mama Cass had only given Karen Carpenter that ham and cheese sandwich, both of them would be alive today.

I believe the melody for "California Dreamin'" appears as one of the melodies incorporated in John Fahey's composition "Raga Called Pat". I'm not sure who wrote the music first (my bet is on John Fahey). You can find "Raga Called Pat part 3" and "Raga Called Pat part 4" on Fahey's Voice of the Turtle album released in 1968.

I've been hearing an ad on the radio for a local university and their performing arts courses and the voice says, " Hi, this is Lou Adler for...". It can't possibly be the same person. This is in CT.

I always liked Jose' Feliciano's recording of this tune. His guitar work is exceptional and really cool. Hell, his vocal even works on the song.
Herb, that's a good point made about the sandwich, I never thought about that but it's true..JH

That's a great tune, and it captures the zeitgheist of the 60's perfectly.
I didn't know that John Phillips had died. I'm sorry. He was a tremendous talent, but was almost always out of control.
