We still have the BIG satellite and its receiver. Slowly we are losing our channels one by one. They are not broadcasting on C band but switching to the small dishes exclusively. We are going to have to make a switch. Which is better and why?

There was a channel on G7-21 I really miss. It was the Jazz Channel, by BET. It was one of the first to leave about 3 years ago. Do any of you know if its available on either dish?

Thanks,
Randy

Randy, Dish Network has BET, Black Entertainment Television, channel 124. DirectTV has it too. We switched to Dish from DirectTV a few years ago and like it a lot better. Dish has a good promotion for first time customers.

Yep, AMC disappeared this weekend from F4-1. Dropping like flies. HBO was VC2 Plus for 2 weeks. Wonder why?

well..regardless..there are many times that even with 200 channels there's nothing on !

oh wait .. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is always on..but "I Love Lucy" has lost it's "ALWAYS ON" status..but there are 2 or 3 "Seinfelds" in a row so that counts..and lets not forget "Law and Order"..our favorite show..

We have Direct TV and find them to be very reponsive and reliabe. The system is always active umless a big thunder storm with dark clouds and heavy rain is right outside the windows..

Same here Randy. They have taken away Lifetime Channel, FX, and several more.
The only reason we hadn't switched is because dish network and direct tv say we can't get Fox Net in our area. we have to have Fox Net to watch Nascar

Terry I find that odd about FOX..everyone points there DISH to the same Satellite..don't they ? I think someone is giving you the run around..unless of course you are talking about the local FOX affiliate which is part of the local channels which you have to pay a few $$ extra for. This is the channel Nascar is on..and of course the Carolina Panthers..this IS part of the local channels offering.

What we do here at home is I have Universal Basic from the local cable provider for the local channels which includes the FOX local affiliate..this costs I think $7/mth..and then we use the DISH for everything else.

Universal basic is not the same as Basic..you have to ask for it. We actually get about 10 channels and it is probably 1/2 the price of basic.

I don't know if one is better than the other but I've been on Dish Network for several years and would highly reccomend them!!

The few times I've called customer service they have been very helpful and I could actually understand them. They can talk and understand redneck as well as we do!!

We have Dish as well. We had cable but they became so high and mighty and kept on raising rates. The mayor of our city was so PO'd he told everyone to get the Dish. Now when the cable people come round I tell them to pound salt with great satisfaction.

My wife likes Dish. I seldom watch TV, other than getting hooked on "Deadwood" which doesn't air again till March.

I have had cable, The Dish network and now Direct TV. I found that when I had problems with the Dish network recievers or signal I was on my own for solving them. Dish was always trying to sell me new equipment or blamed athmospheric disturbances. I switch to Direct TV and for three years I have found them quick to deal with. I had a Box problem (out of warranty) they sent me a new one (free). I got Tivo from them (digital recorder)They came and reinstalled my cable (Free). After having the three I am totally satisfied with Direct TV. They should be satisfied with me (109.00) a month.

Tony, I'm talkin about Fox Network, not Fox sports, or local affiliate. Dish Network says we can't get Fox Net in our zip code area. although we had Dish network a couple years ago and we got Fox Network then. we had to get a wavier to get it out of Chicago, but they say now there's no gauarentee we would get it even with the wavier. Direct Tv tells us the exact same thing. I think the main thing is none of those foreigners(sp) who you can barely understand, know their tales from a whole in the ground about nothin!

I have had Dish Network twice, once when I was married and now that I am on my own. Both times I have had numerous problems with them. The first time, the installer mounted the dish pointing into a tree that had no leaves on it at the time. Well, when the tree filled up with leaves, our system stopped working. They had the audacity to want to charge us for a service call to move it to another point on the house. Now I am having problems with my system. One of the sattelite receivers keeps going out. I called them several times and they troubleshot over the phone. Once in a while I got lucky and it started working, but only for a day or two and if I didn't switch channels. After about 2 months of this hit and miss service, I called and they said they should make a service call at $99.00. It seems that when you take advantage of the specials where they give you a free system, you actually own the equipment. I argued that the unit is less than a year old and should be under warranty and they did send a guy out for no charge. He replaced the receiver unit and it worked great for about a month. Now it's out again and nothing I do will get it back. Again they want to charge me to come out. I said no thanks and am waiting for my one year obligation to end in December, at which time, I will probably go to cable or Direct TV. Luckily I still have the local channels, the History channel and TBS.

I believe we have a clear winner here. Most people seem to be happy with Direct TV, and a large portion are unhappy with Dish Network.

I thank you for the input.

Randy,
There's really no need to abandon your big dish. You can get a 4DTV receiver from General Instrument, and it uses the big dish but picks up a TON of programming, both digital and analog, both on C band and Ku band as well. And it's first generation signals too...not compressed like the little dishes. You can get pretty much everything the little dish does and a whole lot more. Do a google search for 4DTV and check it out.

My experience:

Direct TV: 1 room, good performance, no problems. I had the top package, think it's called premium. They do have a contract on their service, though it's no big deal. I had it for approx 6 years

Dish: exactly same price as direct - I got 4 rooms, free DVR, more music channels, more educational channels, slightly better package than direct's best, good performance, no contract, other than if you cancel in a year, they want the equipment back. I've had it since early spring, no problems at all.

After I made the switch, direct kept calling me to try to get me to switch back by offering a better deal. They couldn't even come close. They couldn't even get me two rooms for the price Dish did 4 without cutting the viewing package.

Both work well, but Dish gives you much more for the same price. And to me a big one, I didn't get high pressure from Dish, just gave me the package comparisons and prices, waited on me to call them back. They were helpful and friendly, but not pushy.

Direct tv wouldn't stop bothering me after I canceled, called me every day for weeks, and got downright rude about it. Finally told them to put me on the don't call list - and leave me alone!

Lem, I just done a search on 4dtv and the cheapest I found was $549.
most were $700+ . then you still have to pay for programming. YIKES!

I already have a dish 500(dish network)installed on a post and coax run to the tv, but they said I could not get Fox Net which is where the nascar races come on the first half of the year. I got it before through a waiver out of Chicago, but can't get it now.
I checked on Direct tv's website, and according to the website I can get Fox in my
area, but when we called them about 6 months ago, they said there would be no gauarentee we could get it even with a wavier.
It's purty rediculos when you think about it.they send men to the moon, make spy planes that fly on their own, but we can't get Fox net because it ain't in our zip!

We have DirecTV and we like it.
When we call up the channel guide, we can still hear the program we were watching, and we can see it smaller in the corner of the screen.
Some other systems don't allow this. For example Adelphia digital cable puts up advertising instead of the show that you were watching.
What does Dish Network do?

This is important, because even with hundreds of channels, I spend a lot of time searching for something that doesn't suck.

The Quote above was written and sung by John Prine in one of his first two albums in the early 70's. I think it continues:

"...have a lot of children, feed 'em on peaches" or some such truck.

Glad to be of service.

We had Dish Network for two years. We didn't have any complaints with our original programming. We watched very few of the channels in the package. SO, I had this great idea to cancel our service and go with our local cable company so we could get the local network programs and local news. Big Mistake! Digital Cable, Yea,give me a break! The reception was terrible, some stations were unviewable and they didn't have Turner South or any of the baseball games we thought we were getting.

Ok, wife and son say, "you idiot, what have you done"!! Alright, I said I'll fix it. Ironically, Bell South calls the next day with an offer for Direct TV. Since I have my home phone,DSL and cell phone through Bell South, I can also get Direct TV and get a discounted rate for all my services. Sounds good to me and solves all my problem. I ask the sales rep if I get the network stations, ABC,CBS,NBC? She says yes, and they are local to boot. So I ask her at least twice more before I commited and she says "Yes, you get the local network stations"

Alright, sign me up! I was at work when they came to install the service. But I did tell my wife to call the cable company and tell them to discontinue our cable service when Direct TV installer arrived. Shortly after the installer leaves, wife calls and says "we gotta problem"! No network station's and to boot there's about a 125 home shopping channels, a few cartoon channels and a lot of other garbage that ain't worth watching. So, I say, surely not, Bell South assured me we got the network channels.

Well to make a long story longer. When I got home, sure enough, no local stations. We did manage to make a favorites list. We came up with about 10 channels, altho 3 or 4 of those were questionable. So,I've managed to jump from the frying pan into the fire!

I call Direct TV. They say NO you can't get the network channels in your area. I call Bell South and tell them they Lied to me. They say, Sorry Charlie, ain't nothing we can do. I call Dish Network and ask them if I can get my service back with them so I can get the network channels and they tell me I can't get the network channels in my area?

Both Direct & Dish suggest that I need to get a antenna! I say, man you gotta be oughta your mind! This is the 21st century, I ain't gonna get no damn antenna and put it up beside the TWO satelite dishes I got on the house now. I use to turn our antenna 45 years ago while my daddy hollered out, "Turn it just a little bit more to the left" "There that's pretty good"

I went from Dish Network to Cable to Direct TV and back to Cable in a matter of 4 days! And I'm still in the dog-house!

My suggestion would be to get an antenna!!!
"Honey, can you turn it a little bit more to the left, hold on, that's pretty good" "Wait a minute, when you let go of it, the picture gets fuzzy"

We can send a dang spaceship to mars but!!!!
