I've been spinning this CD silly since the ISGC. It's Jake's first studio album and was recommended to me by his drummer in St. Louis (Jeff). I would love to see the songwriter credits on this great music. Justin Trevino helped mix this CD, so the steel guitar is quite audible.

If you like Johnny Bush and the early Ray Price stuff then you need to check out Jake's CD's.

Many of you would appreciate the way these guys dress for a show. Very nicely tailored western suits in St. Louis.

If my mind is intact, I think our buddy Dicky Overbey is the writer. Dicky has many good songs, one of which "Scene Of The Crying" is on Justin's album. What you enjoyed at St Louis happens every weekend in and around San Antonio. It's a geographical thing and I might add, to get these quality recordings, forget Nashville...with guys like Bobby Flores, Justin Trevino, Jim Loessberg, Bill Green, Tommy Detamore...they are all great musicians and can put a project together that will make you forget Tennessee as far as "traditional" music is concerned....PLUS...they have the venues down there..(old German/Chech dance halls) where people faithfully support the working bands....guys like Billy Mata..his following are willing to drive within a 100 mile radius of San Antonio to hear his fine band. Someone said SA should be the new "music capital"...I agree.

Certainly I should augment the very accurate statement of Larry's. San Antonio is the home base for these pickers (with the exception of Austinite Jim Loessberg). But hearing bands playing in this style is no big deal all over Texas, since it's the indiginous music here.

One astounding band drinking from the same musical well and playing the same gigs as Jake and the Insiders is Chad Rueffer (pronounced "riffer") and the Outsiders. Chad sings the good stuff and the band consists of former Cherokee Cowboy Reggie Brown on bass, the awesome Reggie Rueffer on fiddle (Charlie Pride band), and TX SGHOF member Gary Carpenter on steel. Many consider this band to be the equal of Jake's incredible group and I'd be hard pressed to disagree.

Add to this that Curtis Potter and Darrell McCall are all playing around here and put together bands with Rick Price, Scott Moon, Justin, etc. Out in West Texas, Jody Nix has a great fiddle band, Johnny Bush still gigs all the time {w/yours truly, usually. Occasionally Johnny Cox), Hank Thompson as well, Ray Price is always playing somewhere, etc.

At St. Louis, I felt oddly spoiled and Texas proud to see all the folks from other parts of the country eating Jake's music up like it was the first time they had ice cream. I am spoiled. God blessed Texas.

Herb,

I believe the term you used in response to my enthusiasm for Jake's music was "starved". You're right! But it's great to know where to find a heapin' helping of good stuff.

BTW: I'm interested in the songwriter credits for all the songs on that CD, not just the title cut. Or if anyone knows the original artists that would help. I don't want to be giving Jake credit for a Johnny Bush song for the rest of my days.

If memory serves me correctly, “You Had A Call” was originally recorded by Faron Young, while Dicky Overbey was working with him! I remember seeing Dicky w/Faron near Trenton, N.J. in the early ’60's. ‘The White Horse Bowlng Academy’, during the time that I was working in the house-band with Dick Rich.

Ron,

If you love the Jake Hooker record (I do, too!), you also should hear the CD of Amber Digby ("Music From The Honky Tonks"). Amber is the girl who sang a few songs in the Jefferson Room with Jake - this is pure country: Great voice, great band (guess who is on steel? Right, Dickie Overbey!). I did some driving tonight and played the whole CD three times in a row!

She's only 23, so who says Country Music is dead!

Kind Regards, Walter

And it is a good question!

I thought it is available through Southland Records (www.southlandrecords.com) but I guess it is not. The album was produced by Justin Trevino, also was recorded in his studio. Unfortunately, the info given on the album is not really guiding you how to order. There is a phone # given for booking: (417) 394 2089, , also there is an e-mail: lezzanova@austin.zz.com and a website: www.lezzanovamastering.com (I already tried this one, doesn't work). If anybody has more info, please post it here!

In the meantime, here are the songs included:

1) Heart I'm Ashamed Of You
2) Cowboy Lovin' Night
3) If You See My Baby
4) Close Up The Honky Tonks
5) Here I Am Again
6) It's So Easy To Forgive Hime
7) Somebody Somewhere
Cool Three Years
9) The One You Slip Around With
10) Back Into my Arms Again
11) You're Still On My Mind
12) Foolin'
13) The Treshold
14) Just Get Up And Close The Door

Kind Regards, Walter

I've asked Steve Reed at Southland Records to drop in here if he can answer the question on where to buy Amber's CD. If he choses to answer by e-mail instead then I'll let you know.

Walter, I'm going to have to start making notes to myself. I had intended to look you up at Scotty's but forgot about it. Catch you next time you're in the neighborhood. Thanks for the recommendation on Amber's CD.

Hey Ron,

Not a problem! I also forgot to look for some people that I would loved to have met, but the convention is always such a big event, you constantly meet somebody or do something (just an excuse for my bad memory!)

The nest time I'll be in your neighborhood will probably be for the next convention, just a little trip of about 4,500 miles for me!

See ya, Walter

If Jake, Dickey, Bobby, etc,...ever came to Central Illinois...

Central Illinois wouldn't know how to handle it.... After all I am not sure if Jake knows any Rascal Flatts songs...
