Just heard "How the west was swung" with Tom Morrell.
Man oh jeepers, that guy can play!
Makes me feel like a monkey wearing welding gloves....
Great listening.

Andy, there are currently at least 12 volumes in that series, one of which is only available on cassette, volume 2&3 are combined on one CD. There's also a compilation called "Wolf Tracks" with cuts from volume 1-10. Definitely the best Western Swing being recorded today, and some of the scariest non-pedal playing ever! Morrell is just a flat-out monster!

Yup, Morrell is great. I have 3 or 4 of the series. He puts together some great bands too. Hot stuff and tone to die for.

And yeah, I was stunned. It has always been my own personal opinion, (for me only) that pedals and levers would just over-complicate things.
Mr Morrell has obviously taken that idea and put it on steroids.
Whew, he is a monster for sure!

Tom was/is a monster pedal player as well; Tom Bradshaw released a duo LP with Tom and Recce called "Sextet Sessions", recorded in '72- I believe Tom had a pick on every hand, and the chord voicings and soloing on that LP rival the densest Curly Chalker chord work- just incredible.
I also love his non-pedal playing, and those Time Warp Tophands recordings are all fantastic. Plus, he brought Bobby Koefer to the party on a few of them- what a player!!!! |

You said it, John! Volume #4 with Clint Strong on guitar is incredible.
I needed a broom to sweep up my jaw after I first heard Tom solo on "I can't give you anything but love". There's wonderful playing by everyone on each of Tom's records. |

When it comes to western swing on a non pedal steel, one would have to search the world over for one better than Tom Morrell.
Simply a genious. He gets chords that defy any tuning he uses. It is best put, by saying; what he gets on his steel is NOT on my guitar. NO matter what tuning I could ever use.

Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Tophand's 1-3 AM set at the 2003 Scotty's Convention was a religious experience.
I was dead tired at 12:59 AM but as soon as his band kicked off their first note I was wide awake with an ear-to-ear smile on my face.

I have several Top hands CD's and they are all great.
And Gerald is quite right, the set at Scotty's was awesome. Just amazing playing from TM.
And it was also amazing the number of living legends who stayed up against doctors orders to see it too. |

"DIFFERENT".........that's what he is.
NOTICE how everyone's ears perked up with the steel guitar that sounded "different".
When just about everyone today sounds just about like everyone else, it is most refreshing to hear "DIFFERENT" sounds coming from a steel guitar. Keep up the great work Tom. We're all a listening!!
Non-pedal steel is NOT NEW! It's been around for ages, but now we're drifting into a generation thing. Sorry about that! |

| Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Tophands are living legends. I have all of their CDs and have darn near worn them out. I hope to see them live one day. In fact, I'm going to send this then try and find their upcoming schedule and plan a trip to do just that! It would easily be worth 3 or 4 hundred for a plane ticket and board. Thanks, guys! Tom Morrell was here in Jacksonville a few years ago for one night with Leon Rausch and some of the Playboys, and I didn't find out about it until the weekend after they had gone.  I live about 10 minutes from where they played, too. |
