| My daughter Jen, a very talented 24-year old singer-songwriter (think Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Ani DeFranco) hasn't been able to find folk/pop/alt venues to gig at since recently moving to Phoenix, AZ. Any leads? Any interesting indie labels in Phoenix? Good management? |

REALLY!
Not much of anything...My band hasn't done any club work for the past 5 years. In fairness we haven't pursued much club work.
The only thing people seem to want is classic R&R with a few country tunes. I seldom even take the steel to our gigs anymore. Even though we could play country all night if it was requested.
We play mostly private parties.
I am unfamiliar with the venues that cater to the young/indie crowd. A buddy of mine, Chuck Hall, is a fantastic blues guitarist/singer that used to be busy 7 nights a week, is down to mostly week-ends now and he has a pretty good following.
He plays Europe a few time a year to make some money.

There is a "coffee house" on Indian School Road and 36th Street called Mama Java's.
It is pretty new, and they have a folk music format that seems to be working for them. I see young people in there all the time performing, and, of course, there is no alcohol.

Have her pick-up a copy of the New Times or go to http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/ . Among other things, it lists lots of venues for alt-type things. The majority of these venues will be right there in Tempe since it's college central.
Have her also check-out Aezra Records at http://www.aezra.com/home.php . The main guy there is Eric and he's a good cat. The label, as of now, has no country acts and they do have major distribution.
