I hate it. This was such an important club for so many years. AND, a whole lot of great steel players have made their magic in there - Ivan Greathouse and Danny Sneed among many others. It's a shame.

The smoking ban (which I support) has really hurt the clubs in my area.

One of my regular, nicer clubs, has cut down from Fri and Sat to only Saturday.
(Three years ago is was Wed thru Sat)

Another club has the following message on their outside marquee:
Quote:
Where Are All The People That Wanted No Smoking?

Thanks Tony P.

We either use our own common sense, or let these people heard us like cows. And then they run cows in a stanchion and knock 'em in the head with a hammer! The cows never knew what was comeing!

I bet 'ya if a war vet that died on Normandy beach were to come back to life and light a cigarette where he used to smoke it, somebody nowadays would scorn him and ask him to put it out! Kinda makes you wonder what he died for don't it !!!!!!!!!

Agree about the "drinking & driving", and the "no smoking"....both are hard on the bar / live music business. But let's not overlook a couple of my pet peeves....DJs and the Karoake (sp?) singers(?).

The Main AM Country Radio Station in my area,
CHAM, http://cham.701.com

whose motto, as seen on their webpage, is
"Celebrating 20 Years of Ontario's Best Country"
is switching to a TALK RADIO format next month.

There's something more than a Smoking Ban causing this downturn.

Another Honky tonk closed its doors today..Steel Guitars were first to go,and people stayed away.........................................They rocked Country music, no one came to hear them play.........Now they closed, another Honky tonk today. Verse of a song I wrote and recorded 9 years ago. Songs called "no place to play". Fits today.

I too hate to see another legendary Honky Tonk like Mr. Lucky's go out of business. It’s true that DUI laws and no smoking laws are part of the cause, but I also think it has a lot to do with technology. I believe that cable tv, satellite tv, vcr's, dvd players, playstations and the internet have all had an effect on the live music club scene. Younger people are the ones that go out and party, and their generation grew up with all of these home entertainment services and devices. Sadly, they just don't care as much for live music as people did 20 years ago. Also, the music industry blatantly panders to the younger generation and I think that a lot of people see through this and are turned off by the "products" that the music industry has to offer. It seems that you see a lot better crowds in clubs that offer "alternative" styles of music. Anyway, it sucks that Mr. Lucky's is closing down.

Ron, I believe the club Waylon Jennings worked at may have been Green Gables here in Phoenix.

There was another club that burned down years ago that was two stories like Mr. Luckys, but I cannot remember the name of it. It was on the Phoenix/Tempe "riverbottom", and was last open sometime in the 1980's (as I recall)
