but money talks... I guess it would be hard to turn down $2.5MM - Just think about the music legacy associated with that particular instrument though... It's kinda hard to swallow the fact that a Japanese Investment Firm pulled it out of the US.

There is speculation that this is an April Fools Day joke- if you go to the Tennessean.com site the article isn't there- the address is the IP address of mandolincafe.com

Dang, I'd just boughta ticket to Japan to go see it, too!

I guess the "Bill Monroe Foundation" is the big loser on this deal.
They won the bid on it a few years ago at $1.125 million and paid 10% down with 18 months to pay it off. They did raise the money, but the bank(doing the financing) wanted proof that there was no leans or back tax owed.
They missed the deadline so the deal was called off, but I haven't heard if they ever got any of their deposit back. I heard they paid James over $125,000. in down payments and interest.
They wanted it to be the center piece of the Bill Monroe Museum at Bill's birth home in Rosine, Ky. Now it gets to go to Tokyo.

Now we know what price James Monroe puts on his dads heritage and legacy.

John,
You may be right, if you go to Tennessean.com and search there is no such story. I was starting to get upset for nothin'!

Yep, John and Alvin, I think you may be right... Seems that someone at the Mandolin Cafe is having some fun. That's a pretty good April Fools day prank.

Respectfully,

A friend of mine, Helmut Mitteregger, bluegrass mandolin player and leader of the Austrian Bluegrass Band "Nugget" bought a mandolin that was previously owned by Bill Monroe a couple of years ago for about $25,000. He never played it live (of course not or do you want somebody to spill his beer into it?), just kept it as a treasure and probably some sort of investment. In the meantime he sold it again (I think for app. the same price he originally paid), but that's still far from $2,5 Millions.

Kind Regards, Walter
