Time for a little controversy!!!
Okay, so really, what does it come down to?
I would wager that 95% of the time, if there's a female in a band or who's an artist, she's there as a vocalist. Rarely, the case is she sings and plays an instrument. Even more rarely, she is purely an instrumentalist. Never ever have I heard of a female producer. Surely they're out there, but they are huge exceptions. For a first world nation that has been through its throes of equality in status for both genders, something just plain don't add up.
Furthermore, I never hear any of my female friends complain about how few women are actually involved with professional music, and none of them express any interest in being involved.
What's the deal? |

Chris, in my last band, for 12 years my wife was the singer, but we had a female keyboard player, who was also the manager and booking agent. We enjoyed much local success in St. Louis and out of the country with the D.O.D. Rose was(is) an excellent keyboardist and very pro to work with. JimPeters |

Well, off the top of my head, one only has to look at the membership of the various orchestras in Los Angeles to see women who are highly skilled instrumentalists. The Ear Unit, http://www.earunit.org/about.htm is a contemporary music ensemble of, primarily, women who have extraordinary instrumental skills. Then of course there's Allison Krause, and Elana from the Hot Club of Cowtown, not to mention our own illustrious ladies of the steel guitar..... |

there are lots of great female instrumentalists, too many to start naming really. as far as producers i can think of allison krause (her own stuff, nickel creek, cox family) linda ronstadt (david lindley, some of her own stuff) gail davies, kd lang. there are others i can think of that produce only their own music so i guess i'd agree that there is a shortage of female producers that primarily handle other artists. |
