If this is a topic discussed before my time on the SGF, I apologize. I have a friend in Nova Scotia who is asking me about a Selmer 6 string lap with the Truvoice 2-tube amplifier built into the guitar case, has an 8" speaker. The guitar is Serial No. 439, and the amp is No. 7930. On some initial research on Google, I have seen the site of the Henri Selmer amplifier/umbrella!!! factory in the UK. To save me effort, where this may have been discussed previously, can any folks kindly advise me of sites I should look at for the Selmer lap steel guitar. It's a dark sunburst guitar, machine heads straight out. Thanks |

I have something v similar - a D-6 "FHD Mohawk" (really a Selmer) which came with a "Truevoice" amp in a car boot sale about 10 years ago.
It's a lovely steel, nice wood, from 1946, but I'm going to ebay it soon (in Europe) as I really need money and have my lovely 10 string EH-150 to comfort me.
Good string spacing, easy bending behind bar. Quite an Art Deco look (shapewise).
No real help, I know, but just thought I'd reply anyway... |

as far as I know, Selmer was (still is ?) a UK distribution company. They took in US Steels (mainly Rickenbacker)and rebranded them for the UK market. [This message was edited by mickd on 13 November 2003 at 03:12 PM.] |

George, I have a Selmer just like this one currently on Ebay in the UK. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2572258601&category=621#ebayphotohosting.
It's in a 1964 catalogue alongside other 'Hawaiian' guitars made by Hofner in Germany, so I suspect these were too, although labelled "Selmer of London". Mine had no jack socket, just a wire coming out of a hole in the side, and the pickup which looks quite narrow, is actually U-shaped, going down through the brass plate, along, and coming up again to form the bridge, which is magnetic. Sounds OK. I think I paid £150 (about $200?) a couple of years ago. |

Again, thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. My buddy in Nova Scotia that has the Selmar, doesn't have a computer (yet), that's the reason I was asking. I've copied all your comments and pics.

Ooops! I didn't mean that one on Ebay was mine. I meant I have one just like it. Probably keep it too. |

Thanks Howard, those are great sites. I've been busy for a couple of days, haven't looked at SGF, and was pleasantly surprised. Neat stuff. I'm glad my buddy asked, because I wasn't even familiar with the name. Geo |
