I just got back from seeing the "Taj Mahal Trio" -- a drummer, a bass player and the man himself. He played primarily on a D'Angelico hollowbody, and added a little banjo and piano.

Tucked away on stage behind his backup guitar was a Gold Tone lap steel. He didn't touch it tonight, but I never knew that lap steel was included in the considerable list of instruments he plays. Has anyone heard him on lap steel?

The crowd must have been stiff, usually he puts on a grass skirt, and does a Sal Hoopi march or 2 and Tiny Bubbles, all in Leavitt tuning.

It was a pretty responsive crowd, and we really could have used a Sol Ho'opi'i march (we've already had some snow).

If he brought a grass skirt, it was stashed away more securely than the Gold Tone. He's doing two shows a night for more than a week, so I suspect he'll pick up his lap steel -- if not the skirt -- at some point.
