Yup. I was playing in a "closing Band" for them here a couple months ago.

Gary Morse's playing to me was of course the high point, as well as his '69 Sho~Bud Professional. He had a Cat Can™ Dobro, but I think he did the intro through a match bro. a Pod xt and Two Nvl 400s with trucker girls on the fronts.

Their song selection was heavy on Waylon, and Hank.

The guitar player was obviously "playing down to the gig", and they had to dress a little obviously "trailer parky", but they came across as an "ultimate bar band" which was as they planned I'm sure.

The Bass player was a VERY nice looking lady besides playing perfectly.

My eyes searched her saggy flannel shirt and "comfort fit" faded levis like a rescue copter scanning a mountain range for life in the the craggy peaks and lush foliage hidden in a fog bank. The growing worry of running into one of them crept in as the fog engulfed the craft. ( Obligatory metaphor for Mr Drivdahl.)

Dierks is a VERY good songwriter.

Great taste in music as well.

Great song Theresa. I get to play it every weekend. The banjo roll at the end of the song is a real bear on dobro. And the crowd goes wild.

"What Was I Thinkin'" by Dierks Bentley is hardly the end of his songcrafting. His album is excellent, no joke. My favorite from it are, of course, "What Was I Thinkin'" along with "Forget About You", "Bartenders, etc." (who said drinkin' songs are a thing of the past?), "How Am I Doin'", and "I Bought the Shoes". It's all real musicianship combined with great craftsmanship in songwriting. Dierks said he spent his time in Nashville hanging around bluegrass players, not just the country guys, to craft his sound. After busting his butt for so long, his work is finally paying off.

Unfortunately I will not be able to see the George Strait tour, but for those of you who do get to go, don't forget to show up for this excellent "warm up" act. I saw him live at Stone Mountain this summer and it was excellent. The whistle-blowing of the Stone Mountain train made for a superb rendition of "Train Travelin'". Got his autograph there, too--what a nice guy!

So go out and get his album, because you deserve it, and see him on tour if you can. If it helps, the album is chock-full of pedal steel, and for you guys, as Eric said, if you go see him live, you'll probably get to see his really cute bass player as well, who I last saw wearing a cowboy hat and a little white tanktop.

Interesting... Just goes to show how different folks taste is. This song was on the recent 10 song "learn all these band CD" given to me for rehearsal. I don't have a dobro and got rid of my cat can. I just felt that the song was inane... of course, that would cover a lot of country tunes.

After a band discussion, we nixed the tune.
