I believe that you are right. Just got in from the last leg of a 1250 trip and did not have enough coffee to think straight.
I still got to get a few hours sleep and go to Atlanta.
The Goodmans were regulars on the Bill Gaither homecoming shows also.

I believe her husbend passed away sometime last year.
I'm glad some of us were exposed to her performences on the Opry.

Thanks for letting us know..This is truly a sad day.The lady is known as the
"Queen of Southern Gospel Music" & has dedicated her life to it.She will be sorely missed by all who were touched by her music.
Her family ( The Goodman's )set standards early on in gospel music that have yet to be reached by any others.She has been one of my all time favorites in gospel music for many years.Now she has rejoined her beloved family...Ron [This message was edited by Ron Whitworth on 29 December 2003 at 07:31 AM.] |

| What a sad day for the fans of gospel music. The Happy Goodmans were always one of my favorite groups. I remember seeing them live as a teenager and the building was packed out. All four of the singers, Rusty, Sam, Howard and now Vestal have now passed on to the other side. My memories of this family will linger on. Vestal had the kind of voice that when she started singing I knew it was her immediately. My heart is saddened by this loss and for the children. May God comfort them during this time of sorrow. |

I have always been a big fan of Southern Gospel Music, and when Bill Gaither first came out with his Homecoming videos, the most impressive person in the first video was Vestal Goodman. She was a prayer warrior and a great singer. In this first video, they gathered in a circle and prayed for Dottie Rambo, and it was Vestal's prayer that was the most powerful thing I heard that day.
When my wife and I had a chance to go to Nashville, to the Quartet Convention, the Homecomeing videos were just taking off, and they had a performance there one night with a group from the videos, and of course the Goodmans were there. As we sat there watching them all gather, my wife kept asking me, "Where's Vestal?" Well, everyone was wondering as well, I'm sure, but then a voice was heard in the back of the auditorium, and here came Vestal, out of the shadows, and brought the house to its feet. Not many people have that effect on an audience, but Vestal did.
She will surely be missed, and I am sure that in some future homecoming video, Bill and the gang will pay homage to this wonderful lady.

Hey Reggie; does anyone know if Bobby Goodman is still with us? I believe he was the youngest & played bass with them for awhile, sang a number or 2 as well. I do know for a fact that he played bass for the Hemphills at least once as I saw them at a Sunday night Opry early 70's.
Any info, anyone? |
