This goes hand in hand with the other thread re: Brad Paisley's show.

I'm fortunate to play with some hip youngsters (young hipsters?) who love traditional country music. We're called The Saltines, we play Monday nites at a small punk rock bar, and the only things we mic are the vocals, acoustic guitars and string bass. The drums and steel guitar/Tele are all stage volume, which is plenty for this joint. I can play all nite and no more hissing in the ears upon bedtime.

Thank you, Lord.

Drew

Its funny how the punk rock places are so much more respectful of the musical aspects of what we do than the country places. I had the same experience of nightmare volume levels playing in whats left of the country scene in New England. Now that the bulk of my gigs are in Brooklyn and Manhattan things are much better. A good half of my gigs can be covered easy with just a Fender Deluxe. The trick is using great jazz drummers and string bass players around here. Those guys really know how to control there dynamics.

Oh come on now Drew..that is totally bogus..

It's not possible to play a room, any room, any size without 4 or 5 Marshall Stacks , twelve floor monitors, 8 mics on the drum set , 4 large front fills, 6 medium sized side fills,
stereo 1000 watt power amps, a 48 channel board, an additional 20 space rolling rack cabinet for effects and outboard gear which we all love and need..and don't forget the lights, the visual screens and TV monitors and live action camera's that .....

Dude..You need to re-examine your priorities .

Hi guys. I don't post too often but I come here everyday and read what you have to say. I'd like to chime in on this one.

When I was living in Eugene, OR back in 1979 I went to see Ernest Tubb at the Lane County Fair grounds. It was a fairly good sized hall. I had seen Asleep at the Wheel and other acts there at other times. What really cracked me up was that ET's band consisted of upright bass, drums, steel, guitar (Telecaster), and of course ET playing acoustic rhythm guitar. All he had for a sound system was a small Peavy club PA. It may have been 4 or 6 channels (it couldn't have been more than 200w.) with two mains that consisted of one 12" speaker with a horn. That was it. Nobody was miced. The volume was perfect. I could hear everything perfectly even ET strumming his guitar and it was not amplified at all. Since then I've always used a small portable PA. If it was good enough for ET it is good enough for me.

Hey Bob,

Funny thing is, we've been adopted by the skinhead/goth crowd, who show up in full regalia (body and face piercings, multi-colored mohawks, shredded jeans and leather) and boogie down.

Uh... Unless you got ears on the back of your knee-caps... see what I'm sayin', Vern!
(At least that's what I tell the fools [insert Mr.T dialect on the word "Fool" ] that are way too loud 5 feet in front of themselves).

Drew, never heard your band ( yet!! ), but I already love it!!!! I wish more people realized it's not about the volume level but the dynamics and projection!!
