A '54 Fender Pro T-8, and a '59 Rickenbacker D-8 are sitting in a local (Seattle) music shop, I'm not connected with them in any way but thought someone might be interested:
Some good photos on their website:

You can click on the left hand inventory menus, then click on the link to steels and resonator guitars. Both guitars look to be in good condition. Their asking prices are high, but I'm certain they will deal on this stuff.

Allen, you make me cry. I sold a Fender T-8 just like that one to a pawnshop in Jax, Fl in the late 50's for a measley 75 bucks. It was in mint condition as they say nowadays.
Oh my,

They are asking too much for them. I was in that shop about a month ago and saw them. The Fender Custom is in about $900.00 shape, and the Rickenbacker is worth about $600.00 in real world money.
Those guitars will sit there for a while.
They had a 1951 Fender Pro Amp, however. It was the TV front style. I believe they wanted $1400.00 for it, but it had casters and had been painted red. It sounded good, and the tweed was definetely restorable.

I bet your right.I have been seeing some real nice steels that are not selling because people are broke or holding their money due to the grim economy. |

Hey $75 in 1959 could buy a lot of bacon!
Yeah the guitars are overpriced, but like I said, I know those guys and they will deal.

That Custom looks like a Walnut guitar. And if so they were discontinued in 1954.
With a little Fender Loving Care to remove some of those nicks and dings that guitar will be well worth what the asking price is.
There is a tone that Walnut guitars have that other's have not. The bottom end is greater than the Stringmasters and has a sweeter overall sound.
The price is not far out of hand, but the seller should clean it up a bit without re-finishing the guitar.
Those Custom guitars are great sounding steels and if the asking price is a bit high
I can assure you in the coming months or year
ahead that asking price will be the norm.
Would I buy it? No.I have a Walnut Custom and
I can hear the difference when I A-B my Blonde swamp ash Custom. Those direct thru pickups were what put Fender on the map.
They were Leo Fender's favorite pickups, the change over to the stringmaster had to be made to advance the instrument and update the features, but the the trapezoids had a tone very few steel guitars have. |

Jody,
Though I believe Fender steels to be very under valued in todays market, I have seen that guitar up close and you can find cleaner examples for $1000-$1200.
I would pay $900 for that one, maybe even $1000.
But for $1500 I could almost buy a Custom AND a Dual Professional.
The Rickenbacker isn't that bad a deal. If you could get it down to $650 or $700, that would be more like it. But I don't really like those hollow body Rickenbackers all that much. I think they are better than those lame hollow Gibson Console Grande's, though.
But like I said, the 1951 Pro Amp is a pretty good deal, if you could get the paint of.

But if it said "Noel Boggs" on the front, that would be a totally different story!

A local music shop has a 70's Black Fender Stringmaster D8.
It looked in excellent condition with a HSC ... I had my 1 yr old in my arm so I couldn't test it ...
$799 ... how do these later model Stringmasters compare with the earlier ones ... ????
