I have been fooling around the past few weeks with a new tuning for standard guitar - CGDAEG, low to high. I came across it in an article on Robert Fripp. Although King Crimson is not a favorite of mine by any means, the tuning is very neat. It's basically in fifths, like a violin or mandolin. The low C corresponds to the low C on a C6th neck, and the high G corresponds to a High G if you use one. It spreads the chord voicings out more, and I think it will be very useful for writing stuff that doesn't sound so ordinary. There are a lot of nice big open chord forms to work with. The gauges I used for electric were .050, .040, .026, .014, .010 and .009. If you have an old beater lying around, check this out to break some ruts.
