Topic: PU question for Gibson EH100 + EH150 |

Gentlemen, this is a most delicate issue:
i have an EH 100 w: the split blade PU
and an EH150 w: the famous CC PU 1 blade + 3 pole pieces
i find that these two axes really sound similar
i honestly can't hear a diff between them
any comments on this matter ?
is the split blade PU considered a CC PU ?

Well they made alot of variations of that pickup depending on the year it was made and the model number they have differences.
The coil and the bobbins are very similar, the size and shape of the coil, the wire gauge and turn count are a big part of the sound, thats all pretty much the same wether its a split blade or solid. The magnets used are quite different between years and models, thats the other part of the sound.
I have seen similar pickups on sherwoods, another gibson offshoot as far as I know again same bobbin and coil but different magnets.
EH 150 made after 1936 have a completely different magnet than later models, when was yours made? As far as I know all 1936 EH 150's have a removable back and use two large bar magnets after that they went to a smaller magnet that is a segment of a channel horseshoe. I have never had both models (a 36 150 and a later) in my shop at the same time to compare tone! |

the EH100 and 150 i have seem to be from 1937/8
EH100 SR#: 5GE-2088
EH150 SR#: DGE-4805 (the back does come off)

In my book its all Charlie Christian technology. There is a square bobbin, its an easier hole to cut. There are slight differences in magnet and blade, and the guitars were inconsistant. The eh100 is like second generation easier to produce model.
Some of the eh100s had a removeable back, there was a black one on the internet http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/instmnts/lap/index.html
but there are no inside photos although I had seen some. If I see em again I'll grab the and post em.
A few eh100s are wired and then glued together thus unserviceable. But yes I agree they sound alike.

I'm thinking your correct, maybe 39, I think you can trace the number. My 37 is an odd one, its extra thick and has a pointed florentine end on the fingerboard like a 36 eh-150 but the knobs on one side which is said to be a '38 thing.
These guitars sound nice and have huge mojo-factor I'd love a 8 or 10 string one.

Guys,
lets keep this thread going, as Gibson EH-150 / EH-100 enthusiasts. These guitars sound like no others, the pickups are even stolen and mounted on teles, jazz guitars, etc.

I have a late '30's Console Grande D-7, that has CC pickups with adjustable polepieces similar to those used in P-90's. It has the Florentine, pointed-end fingerboards with large pearl block markers. I have yet to see any other CC's like these.

I have a 7 string EH150 with the Charlie Christian pickup. The bottom string is not grooved for a low string, it seems to be set up for a possible 6th or 7th tone.

I have a 10 string EH-150 with a slotted headstock and vertical tuners.
Lovely guitar.
Any idea what it might be worth? Not selling it, but I'm interested - I worry about taking it out on gigs as it must be rare (any ideas as to how many 10 stringers were made?) |

seems to be just over a centimetre at bridge, about 11mm, and just under, say 9mm, at nut.
And yes, the back screws off.
Beautiful wood and sound. Got it at a stupidly low price in a Music-Go-Round in Park Ridge, IL, about 5 years ago. Guy said it had been there for ages (how come?) so sold it to me for what he'd paid for it.
Ricky Davis played it, much better than me, at a Dale W gig in Glasgow a couple of years back. |
