Every once in awhile a song comes along that just reaches out and grabs you. The first one that I remember was when I was about 14 yrs old and was listening to a station in K.C. The DJ said here's a new song from a guy named Conway Twitty and he sang "Its only make Believe". It sent chills down my back. There's been several over the years but I just heard a new Diamond Rio song called "I Believe" and there was the chills again. Something about the words and music and Marty Rowe singing it just Grabbed me. I know there's no steel player in their group but I was thinking what a beautiful song it would be to play on steel. Has anyone else ever had this feeling?

Ray,
I agree it's a beautiful written song and melody. Steel could make it even better! |

A SONG THAT GOT TO ME WAS ONE OF THE NEW HINSONS CALLED THESE CHAINS OF LOVE. GREAT WORDS AND STEEL PLAYING. ALL OF THEIR RECORDINGS HAVE STEEL ON THEM USUALLY BY SCOTT SANDERS. THIS PARTICULAR ONE HAS THAT HAUNTING SOUND WHICH IS GREAT! |

Charles I remember "Rumble" by link Wray. D to E, D to E, D to B. Great guitar song. Earnest I guess I haven't heard that song but from the name of it, I bet it doesn't have the easy chords like "Rumble". haha Theresa, I'm gonna try and learn the song on steel just to see. Norma, I see you have the same last name as me! Do you have any relatives here in Kansas? By the way, I have heard the Hinsons album. Great songs.
Thanks to all who posted.

Twitty's version of "It's Only Make Believe" was really good, but Narvel Felts' version of the same song is a knockout! |

I haven't heard Narvel Felts version of "It's only make believe" but I remember a song he had called "Please reconsider me" and the guy could get higher than a dog whistle. I think he is from Missouri and still performs.
I checked Diamond Rio's website out and the song "I Believe" was written for the Challenger astronauts by Skip Ewing. But the words could be for anyone losing a loved one. Just getting sentimental in my old age! Haha Thanks for the reply Donny.

Ray.
I'm pretty sure Narvel Felts passed away quite some time ago. Your right. He could get up there! I always liked "Losers Cathedral" by him.

Hi Leigh, I hadn't heard that Narvel had passed away so I looked up his website and it looks like he's still alive. It said he had a son that passed away but anyway, here's the address for him. http://www.mkoc.com/NarvelFelts/
Thanks for the response.

For me it was Dolly Parton's version of Jackie Wilson's hit Higher and Higher and her original tune "There" from her album "New Harvest, First gathering.
"There" is a Christian tune, and I am not a Christian, and so the religious signifigance of the song is lost on me, but the depth of feeling with which she sings it is so powerful it transcends any differences of faith.
So much has been written and said about Dolly's figure, we tend to forget that she is one of the most emotional and soulful singers in all of Country Music. |

I like Brook Benton's recording of the song 'Rainy Night In Georgia'. That one reaches out and grabs me every time. |

EBB- I hadn't heard that song in years! Merthy, Merthy, Big Buddy
Mike- I agree about Dolly. Like Elvis, there's no style of song that she can't sing.
Leslie-Brook Benton was one of my favorites growing up. Tony Joe White wrote that song along with Polk Salad Annie.
Fred-I got to video tape Gene Watson live several years ago. He had fellow Forum member Bill Dearmore playing steel. I always enjoy watching it over and over. The man still can sing his heart out.
Leigh-You're welcome! Always nice to find out someone is still alive when you think they're gone.
Thanks to everyone for your response!

For me it's a tune that was never a big hit but should have been. It's from a Swing Shift Album and the tune is called "My Weakness is to Strong" with vocal by Ray Pennington and some of the most hauntingly beautiful and emotional steel work I've ever heard in my life by none other than the "Big E". Speaking of Conway Twitty, I also like "Lost in the Feeling". Mike P mentioned a Dolly Parton tune. Check out her version of "He's Alive"....It's great!!

FYI Narvel Felts is still very active, has a new C.D just out in the past 6-8 months called "Narvelized" and it is great. I saw him in concert about two months ago and he still hits the high notes, He lives about 40 miles from me in Malden, Mo.On his current C.D there are 19 cuts, he has a Webb Pierce song on it "Dont do it darlin" that is excellent. His only son "Bub"was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1995. |

Jerry, I agree that anything Buddy Emmons or John Hughey plays makes a lasting impression.
Rick, I haven't heard of that Faron Young song.
Robert, its good to hear from you! How are things in Missouri? Are you going to be in Tulsa Memorial Day?
Probably the first song that I remember that made a lasting impression on me was Mom & Dad Waltz by Lefty Frizzel. Nothing better than Mom or Dad when you're little.
Again,thanks to all who's responded.

I agree Ray. I've always leaned toward the more hard core country sounds of Bakersfield and Texas Honky Tonk stuff. But I after reading an interview with Diamond Rio outlining why they choose not to do songs about drinkin, cheatin, and hell raisin I started to make a point to listen to them. And since then I have become a big fan. Most all of there music is very positive, well written and the are great musicians. I've been listening to some of the early albums and have to say the have a great body of work.
And this latest song " I Believe" shows again that they pick great songs. And do them very well. |

Hi Ray , things are going pretty good here in Mo. I am planning on Tulsa this year, looking forward to seeing you there. you referred to Lefty, I like just about everything he ever did I have an album that he did in about 1975, His last I think, that is some of the best country music ever done, in my opinion.the musicians are listed, except for the Steel player, and theres steel all over it, and sounds Like Lloyd? but I'm not sure. see you in Tulsa |

That new tune by Craig Morgan "I was almost home" is as good a tune as I've heard in years. I've seen the homeless dressed just as he described in that tune and I've heard a few stories from them that could be the makings of country tunes. |
