We had a huge storm roll through Friday night, and the cable went out a few minutes before ten, so I decided to turn on the radio. Lucky me, I caught the premiere show of "America's Grand Ole Opry Weekend". It was a good show, but needs some improving. In the two hour show, there were a total of 46 commercials, and about eight commercials in each commercial break. An advertisement for the Opry.com's "Next Big Thing" giveaway ran four times, as did Geico. An advertisement for the Grand Ole Opry ran three times. Other advertisers: Benedryl, Tic Tac, Radio Shack, Wrigley's Spearmint Gum, Welch's Grape Juice (Larry King was endorsing it), Pep Boys, Temperpedic Mattress, Bengay. It looked like they were trying to cater to an older crowd, but certainly not with the music. The program schedule, with a track list:
1) "Beautiful Mess" Diamond Rio
2)"I Believe" Diamond Rio
3) "Beautiful Goodbye" Jennifer Hanson"
Commercials (9 total)
4) "I'm Gonna Miss Her" Brad Paisley
5) "A Lot Of Things Different" Bill Anderson (when he announced it was nominated for an ACM Award this year)
6) "I Wish You'd Stay" Brad Paisley
Commercials (6 total)
7) "Behind Closed Doors" Joe Diffie
"John Deer Green" Joe Diffie
Commercials (9 total)
9) Darryl Worley "I Miss My Friend"
10) Darryl Worley "Have You Forgotten"
11) "Blessed" Martina McBride
12) "Raining On Sunday" Keith Urban
13) "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me" Keith Urban
Commercials (8 total)
14) "Ol' Red" Blake Shelton
15) "I Don't Need No Rockin' Chair" George Jones (from Birthday Bash)
16) "The Baby" Blake Shelton
Commercials (6 total)
17) "Simple Life" Ricky Skaggs
1 "Highway 40 Blues" Ricky Skaggs & Keith Urban
Commercials (8 total)
19) "Drive" Alan Jackson (June 2002)
20) "Where Were You" Alan Jackson (June 2002)
I think they could cut down on the commercials. But maybe they're having to play a lot of commercials to help pay for the program. It was a pretty good show, but I'd like to hear more songs from the legends...but we know that probably won't happen. They tagged two songs as an "Opry Classic Spotlight"...however, one classic, "Behind Closed Doors" was sung by Joe Diffie, not Charlie Rich. A good show, all in all.
