I'm looking for music with good steel guitar. Not primarely instrumentals, just good songs with good steel, old or new.
Beeing a rock guitarist who has taken to steeling I've kinda started the "wrong way". Beginning with modern music, and working my way backwards in music history.
I really love what Tom Brumley did (and what Buck Owens did) with the Buckaroos, and i have the great "Charley Pride In Person" (my fathers LP actually), but I need more.
Songs or albums, new or old, fast or slow...
Any suggestions?

Ulf, although steel is associated mostly with country music, there is a spectrum going from old country to modern, hard country to country-pop and country-rock. And then there's the Western swing to modern jazz spectrum. Do you have any ideas where in those spectrums your main interests lie? If not, maybe you need suggestions from the whole spectrum to find out what you're most interested in. Give us some hints.

I've listened to a lot of great B Emmons, P Franklin, T Brumley and some Jay Dee Maness stuff and i know where to find those gentlemen. But where should i look for the best of Hal Rugg, Robby Turner, Weldon Myrick, Tommy White and players i never heard of.
I've heard some great playing by Steve Fishell, but i don't remember where.
I'm not lookong for swing stuff. Mostly because i don't play it, and i'm looking for influences here.

Ulf,

Hal has a website you can buy his music from
also Tommy White has a Great album out called By Request you can get by using whatever search engine you use and type Tommy White and it will take you there.
Also you can still get Weldon's albums.
