I have been coming across some of Joe Carson music lately, mostly from Rose the Record Lady's site. I have never heard of him before but really enjoy what I have been hearing. He sounds like a cross between "Pappy" Wade Ray and Jimmy Dickens. Anyone know anything about Joe? Still alive? Thanks in advance for the info.

I was a big fan of Little Joe Carson, used to see him on Cal's Corral all the time when he went back and forth from Texas to California. He got killed in a single-car accident in 1964.

His son, Randy, is a good buddy of mine here in Austin and is a steel player too. I think he's an occasional forumite. Joe's beautiful wife, Janice, also lives here in town and is still a "looker," IMHO.

Hey Rick,
Like Herb, I used to watch Joe on Cal's Corral. He had a lot of good tunes like "Double Life", "Helpless", and "I Gotta Get Drunk" which Willie Nelson covered later. When I was working with Billy Mize he did "Helpless" and I'd never played it before and during the next break Billy showed me the steel ride. It seems he'd played that session with Joe and it was a big help. Too bad he lost his life so young!
