I was watching a replay of a 1970s Rock Music Show last night, and Jerry Lee Lewis was on - with long hair and a beard, doing "Whole Lotta Shaking", at the BBC studdios in London; but behind him was a slightly bemused looking Pedal Steel Player, in a shirt and tie.
What a wierd gig that must have been!
Does anybody know who it was?
Cheers
Dave

I moved to Nashville in April '67, and sometime between then and '70, I was sitting in Linebaughs resturant downtown, when Jack Johnson, Jerry Lee's manager came in and gave me Jerry Lee's phone number and said he's looking for a steel player, call him. Well, if a musician, starting out, is out of work, he's not likely to have even enough money for a L.D. phone call! That was my situation that night! A short while later another friend came in and I gave the phone number to him. A few days later I learned that my friend made the call, and landed the job. So, it may have been him! I don't know how long he kept the job! Oh! his name is Ned Davis who later went with Eddie Rabbit for a long time, until Eddie's passing, several years ago! Ned can be seen behind the Triple Neck Bigsby in one of Eddie's older videos. (On The Other Hand) The steel player on the record was Paul Franklin. I hope this helps!

In 1971, Jerry Lee's steel player was Charlie Owens from Memphis.

I saw the coolest thing a couple of weeks ago. The PBS station from Spokane we get via cable shows an hour of Ed Sullivan evey Sunday evening, and Jerry Lee Lewis was on a segment. He did "She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye" and the steel player (Ned Davis?) was front and centre on stage - almost like you'd see at a steel show.

Ned Davis was on the live album done in Las Vegas. I didn't see a date anywhere, though.

Strange thing here in Memphis,
about every musician that introduces himself to you say's,
"I was Jerry Lee's guitar player,, Or I was Jerry Lee's steel player,"
when if fact they might have been in the house band at "Bad Bobs", Hernando's Hideaway", or Eddie Bond's "Radio Ranch", when Jerry Lee had a single engagement at the club, useing the houseband.

Back in that era,
Jim Roby was the steel player at Hernando's,
Charlie Owens and Robbie Turner(not at the same time) were the steelplayers at Bad Bob's,
I played the Radio Ranch,
niether I, Jim, nor Robbie (that I know of)ever claimed to be Jerry Lee's steel man,
however, I do know Ned Davis went on the road with Jerry Lee when the song "What Made Miwaukee Famous",first hit the pavement, the first show I believe was ,the Ed Sullivan show.
With a 68 Emmons that Jerry Lee bought for him.
I know this is so full of info that everyone want's to fast foward, go ahead, it's just 2 cent's

Ned & I used to chuckle a lot because everybody (well, not EVERYBODY) used to think he was me,& I was him. They thought I worked w/ J.L.L.,& he worked w/ T.O. Unfortunately,Ned is no longer with us.

Ned is no longer with us, but the '68 rosewood Emmons is.

I sold that guitar (after MAJOR Mike Cass surgery) to Brad Sarno in St. Louis who is now giving it the care it never had on the road with Jerry Lee and Eddie Rabbit. It is a WONDERFUL guitar -- E9 sings like the angels and the C6 isn't bad either.

Yup, Ned's old push/pull is sittin right here in my livingroom. Larry Bell (hi Larry) purchased it after Ned's passing and the guitar was in nasty shape. Larry had Mike Cass do his number on it and man is it a sweet guitar. Jerry Lee hired Ned in early '69 to tour the album with "What's Made Milwaukee Famous" on it. Ned's own guitar was so crappy that Jerry Lee went to Emmons and grabbed a brand new rosewood D-10 push/pull for him. Looks just like Buddy's Blade and is within months of the same production date. I think the guitar is actually an early '69. I believe that Ned left the Killer in the summer of '71. It's fun listening to that JLL country stuff while sitting at the guitar I'm hearing on the recordings.

If anyone has pic's (or video) of Ned playing my Emmons, please let me know. Thanks to everyone who helped me piece the history of this Emmons together.
