I got Don Helm's Steel TAB book for E13 at St Louis, and I finally got the time to get into it.
Excelent job. And I really dig this E13 tuning. 10 classic songs, and the TAB is all topnotch.
I don't have the Streetbro back in working order yet, so I retuned the E9 neck to E13 and
it really sounded fine.
Does anyone use E13 with pedals? (a lil heresy here?)
I am sure the Streetbro will be in E13 for 10 strings normally, when I get the longer scale set up finished. |

There are a few people who play E13 with pedals. Almost all pedal steel players play the E9, though.
The standard E9 pedal steel tuning evolved from the E13. It doesn't have the C# string, but the first pedal raises the B to a C#. Since the B and C# notes are rarely played together, E9 with pedals can emulate E13 really well.
In cases where you need the B and C# together, there's a common knee lever that lowers the 2nd string D# to C#.
I can play all of Don Helms' Hank parts on my pedal steel at the same frets, using just the first pedal as required. The tone of a pedal steel is different due to the closer string spacing, but even musicians rarely notice that. Don didn't slant the bar on the Hank Williams records, so the string spacing isn't a major issue.
