I was pleasantly surprised to see T. Grahm Brown come out on the Opry tonight and give a blow away vocal performance on the same stage as Tim McGraw.
Here is a man who I consider a vintage/classic act who came to the Opry on short notice to fillin for Loretta Lynn (who was sick) and showed that he still has a stellar powerful voice and professional poise. He had the class to honor God for his short comings. He sang with deep soulful emotion. A REAL talent. They can polish the daylights out of Tim McGraw with all the money in the world, but when it comes down to it a guy like T. Grahm Brown walks out on short notice and shows the Opry what real talent is. Tommy White also sounded great playing his new MSA behind T. Grahm. I was smilin![This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 30 November 2002 at 07:16 PM.] [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 30 November 2002 at 07:17 PM.] |

What is it about Tim McGraw? He seems like a nice enough guy, but he really isn't that good a singer. I also think he's singing kinda mediocre material. Oh well, variety is the spice of life, I'm sure others dislike my faves so I should probably just hush now. Edited to correct horrific use of punctuation. Tim and his band sounded like early 70s Neil Young on one song. I guess new country is just old rock, but I did enjoy Don't Take The Girl. I guess it was still better than last week with Diamond Reo. At least he was singing on key. Thank god for pitch correcters, they make stars.

T Graham Brown did a fantastic job! He always has, and still does sing with a lot of feeling. Tim is way overrated IMHO. He's probably a nice guy, and can probably sing a good country song. But He's a manufactured star. For instance. Patty loveless was a singer of new style country. But as soon as she was in a position to, she started singing some good old down home country music! I like Pin Monkey. There honest about the music that they play.

T Graham always belted out a great song and is no slouch on the sax either..Check out Con Hunley with Herbie wallace sometime in Sevierville TN. (Pigeon Forge) T.G. and Con are two cats that deserve better treatment by the industry and each remind me of the other. Tim Magraw is a Industry Hype that sells..Remember the old saying "if it smells it sells". Works here.

Leigh, you and I would get along real well. You are absolutely correct about Patty. She's got the same soul as T. Grahm and is the real deal. Pinmonkey are great singers. [This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 01 December 2002 at 11:34 AM.] |

T Graham Brown has always been one of my faves. When I met my wife (on a Carribean cruise), she lived north of Chicago and I lived here in California. I flew back there on a vacation in 89 and we drove down to spend the week in Nashville/Memphis. She basically didn't listen to any country at the time. We got to see a free show at the new Opry that featured TGB. She walked away liking country after that show. Although his band had no steel, they blew me away. His soulful voice just reached out and grabbed you. I'm glad to see he is still around.

I don't know, but I saw all I needed to see last week when he appeared on the Today Show. I noticed 2 drummers and no steel player.
The next day I saw Jon Bon Jovi on a football 1/2-time show, playing to an entire stadium with but a single drummer.
One drummer and no steel is bad enough, but two?
Nuff said.

T. Graham was something! He sure was up to the job-Tim McG has never come close to singing like Ole T did-blew us all away! Great steel by TOMMY! The highlight of the show-probably the whole night. |

Sign of the times: T. Graham Brown, who everyone here agrees is not only a great performer but also kicked ass at the GOO, is a soulful singer who could sing on the same stage with Ray Charles or B.B. King. He's also overweight and has a head full of gray hair. And he's old enough to be the father or grandfather of some of Tim McGraw's fans.
Time McGraw is tall, lean, wears tight revealing clothing, has trendy facial hair, wears a huge hat that says "hey girls, look at me. I'm baaaadd." He's also got this Fairy Tale Marriage to one of the hottest babes in country/pop music. His voice is limited... he had a hard time making several of the high notes on his GOO show..., though he's had a couple of songs with clever or thoughtful lyrics.
It's no wonder that the Music Machine feels who is the easier product to market to the 15-25 y.o. female demographic. "Go with the sexy guy, and maybe we can find some good songs, back him with the best producer and pickers we can hire, and dress him so that the audience will be too busy looking at him to listen to the occasional clam."
However, I will say this, seriously: I like a lot of Tim's music, he's got some good songs. Just not as much as I do Brown's music, whose albums I've purchased.. Travis Tritt also. And if Tim McGraw can make it, a lot of talented people will feel they can make it also. Kind of like the musical "any kid can grow up to be President in the USA."
Ya know, I never really considered T. Graham Brown hardcore country, per se. I'd put him in the "blue eyed soul" category, along with Con Hunley, Razzy Bailey, guys like that. But country music fans have really always accepted the blue-eyed rockers like Jerry Lee, Mickey Gilley, Ronnie Milsap, as being inherently rural in influence, which is probably what defines "country" as an attitude rather than whether or not your music is full of 4/4 shuffles. The "country" was inhabited by white AND black.

Getting married--the best career move Tim or Faith ever made. I'll agree, McGraw has a handful of listenable songs, but notice that out of all the hits he's had, he had to go to covers to find a song really country enough for the Opry crowd. |

Good 'post', Herb
You summed it up well, and still gave Tim some credit for the good work he's been associated with.
I bought his CD three years ago - I couldn't get enough of that song, "One Of These Days", with great work by Paul Franklin and Matt Rollings in particular. I also thought Tim sang it very well. He sounded weak on the show, though.
T. Graham Brown reminded me how few of today's artists manage to connect with an audience - he jumped out of the screen by comparison with the usual Opry diet!
I'll be looking forward to this week's airing of Ray Charles and Travis Tritt's CMT show - Ray just seems to get better and better; this is not a criticism of Travis, but I wish George Jones was going to be doing it - that'd be my two favourite singers in one place....
(I'm glad someone else spotted the resemblance between the 'Pinmonkey' lead singer and Rick Nelson - that's how Rick looked in the seventies...)

Pinmonkey, lead singer does looks alot like Ricky Nelson and sings very well also. Great image. Just a reminder, Dan Dugmore will be playing steel behind Ray Charles and Travis Tritt. Herb you summed things up excellently. |

An old article in Country Weekly said that Tim McGraw has never had any voice training. Well, who would have guessed it? |
