I've been a fan of ol' Lester and the boys for years. Just wondering if any of you other forumites also enjoy Lester and the Cadillac Cowboys?
I think the "Live at the Johnny Mack Brown High School" track was my favorite, but they're all great. I had the opportunity to see their act on TV once...sure wish I had a video of that! "Attair wuz a good'un".
AwwwwRight...mighty fine.

The first time I heard the record, I just about split a gut, I laughed so hard. I think Harold Reed of the Statlers is a natural born comedian. Are the Statlers still performing? [This message was edited by Andy Greatrix on 18 July 2002 at 09:22 PM.] |

Andy,
Yes, the Statlers are still touring but this will be their last year on the road, they are retiring. Jason |

The first time I heard this on the radio was in the early 70's in Maine. It was fairly common to hear live performances of local bands on the radio up there, so I thought this was for real! That was when I thought I had a chance in the music business, as I was thinking, "Heck, I can play better than these guys!" |

Right up there with Spinal Tap and the original Heavy Metal Parking Lot vid.
I like the bit about the 10,000 records piled out back for promotional purposes.

Well AWL-RIGHT. Love the ole Hog. Infact, I had a Cocker Spaniel that I registered with the AKC as "Lester the Road Dog Moron" in honor of the Roadhog.. Yes, that's MORON, not Moran. Greatest dog I ever owned, RIP. Also named a bird after Burford, the barber shop dude.
Those albums are the greatest.

Ol' Wichitaw played that "hot take off git-tar"...reckon there's any such thing as "hot take off STEEL guitar" too? LOL
On a personal, comical note, when my late Father heard them the first time, he got a little miffed. He thought that somehow the Statlers had heard his country group and were making fun of THEM. My mom said there WERE about that bad!!! LOL

My favorite Hog quotes were :
"A man that don't lie got nothing to say..."
"Love is a many splendid thing..."
Priceless, right along with Hank Jr. at Kansas City... |

I have the complete collection on CD of Road Hog and the Cowboys..the interview with Ralph Emery is too much. I've noticed that it seems like only musicians can appreciate their humor. I played it one time for a friend of mine who wasn't involved in music, and they acted like they didn't get it. Seems like musicians love it because we've all been there with bands as bad as that. I still think it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Johnny used to drive trucks a few years back. You need to ask him about the time that Harold was on the CB on night real late and Johnny asked him to do a little "Hog". Johnny said he didn't answer right away, but then he heard Road Hog's voice on the CB about 2:00 in the morning reading the Bible. Johnny said he wouldn't do the Hog thing much, but I guess that night it was quiet and Johnny said he about ran off the road laughing. I believe he said he read the part in Genesis when God created light. You can just use your imagination and think how it would sound. Funny stuff.

AHH Roadhog!!!! Some of the greatest stuff ever!! I had the pleasure of meeting Harold and Don at Renfro Valley. Didn't get to see much of their show because we were doing our Renfo shows at the same time. I had worked with their sons, Will and Langdon, up in Minnesota for a month and they were ALWAYS doin' Roadhog. Anyway, as I was talking to Harold and Don, the Roadhog subject came up. Harold just busted out an "AWRIGHT" right there to me!!! It was great and we laughed so hard I almost got sick. I felt very priviledged to hear that!!
I wonder if the "album" ever got past the "Plywood" certification!!! LOL
