He's fast; he's clean; he's innovative. He usually plays with acceptable tone. How did he get so good?

I remember when he first started (mid '70s), and he was quite a good steelman within two years. He played every chance he got, and tried to come up with his own new licks, along with doing everything that had been done on records back then. He really came alive when he played with Ray, though. Nice guy, too.

A couple years back as I was coming up to his house for a lesson I heard him just tearing up these scales in feakin' quarter tones ! I asked him what he was doing and he said that if you can play accurate quarter tones on the steel those regular notes are easy, So we had a lesson and as I was leaving he was back at it full steam. I think he practices all day every day. One of the greatest players I have ever heard. Just amazing.

Jeff sent me a tape of Carp a few years back, and I knew this guy was great. Later, I saw him with someone on Austin City Limits, and heard him on a gospel album. WOW! He has to be one of the best! Thanks Jeff!
