How are most gospel quartet group recorded? Do they run a track for each of the artists? Or do they record the groups all at one time? I only have a Porta 02 recorder so you can see my problem? Thanks Ole Dave F. |

It usually depends on what the group wants to do in my studio, but I will say, you get the cleanest sound if you can get them to record "one at a time". If you only have a select amount of tracks, then often you don't have much of a choice. |

I have an 8 track recorder, but can only put 4 of them in record at the time. So, with the music already mixed, I can record them all at one time. Sometimes,I will let them all sing at once, then, go back and recut each one as needed. I, also, stack the harmonies where needed.
You could let them all sing on one mike, then record them one at a time while listening to the scratch track.[This message was edited by Reggie Duncan on 13 April 2002 at 09:46 PM.] |

I think because we can, with modern equipment, record everybody on a separate track cleanly and then later, mix them together, we go for the "scientific" approach and do it. However, I think you may just get a better sound if you group all the back-up singers around one good mic and record them as a group. Those that are too loud, back up and those that are too short, stand on a box, those that are too tall, sit on a stool, etc. I think this is more "art" than "science", but it is a tried and proven way of doing it. I think the the singers will be able to hear their harmony parts better and will have a better blend. Try it sometime, you might like it. |

Congratulations! We also have a 16 channel hard drive, and after relearning everything- we love it. (Before, we had 2 DA-88's- fine equipment, when it wasn't broke down).
Took a little time to figure everything out, but is well worth it. It saves time and money, not to mention space. And you get a great, clean sound from them. [This message was edited by Deana Clark on 23 April 2002 at 09:13 AM.] |
