It Sucked! And everyone on it sucked too...
You young folks have to get a grip...
Oops, it hasn't been broadcast yet. Oh well. Archive my comments please, and release them with the proper amount of indignation at the appropriate time.
Thank you, Sincerely,
-John |

Something to ponder:for those of us (and I include myself), that choose to complain about the Opry or it's sound. We should remember that the Opry format wasn't designed for TV.Thanks to better broadcast technology the sound is usually decent. No reflection on the musicians not in the staff band who have mili seconds to prepare on a live quick set-up and play stage with no sound check. It may be the biggest thing since slice bread for an up and coming Artist, but it can be a nightmare for a musician that has to do the same job he gets hours to prepare for at concerts.Especially if it is their first time...JMHO So I guess I will watch this weeks stinking show anyway.

B,
It takes a strong person to admit when they are wrong. You are to be commended.
Last weeks steelplayers, did sound clear, loud,& had great tone! I'm so glad the Tv Opry portion is on for people to see and hear this great instrument. Hat's off to the steelplayers working with artists on the road! Theresa[This message was edited by Theresa Galbraith on 11 April 2002 at 02:29 PM.] |

I thought the show was great tonight, and I am just so glad they do show some steelers..some people don't know what a steel,....opps, sorry, guess the show is just getting ready to start; but, I am a person who thinks the glass is half full, not half empty...just thank the Lord that there is a venue where the steel is shown; I guess that is the reason those guys get some much flack,,,it is just about the only game in town; and if someone wants to complain, they have to do it to this show. If you guys really want to complain about bad steel, come on down to Wilson, NC one Thursday night and listen to me...that will put you into true perspective... |

Kevin Denny kicked some serious butt tonight. That kid has a future in country music if he stays on that road. Chris LeDoux is a good singer and is country but doesn't have a steel in his band. Willie was Willie and Porter was out of tune. There was good steel to be heard tonight. |

Didn't get to hear too much of the show, but caught the Osborne Bro's doing "I'd Walk A Mile" -Wow. Then Charlie Pride was classic as always, great steel playing! Great Band in general. |

Was the Fred with Willie?
I'm surprized no one mentioned the "Dobro" kickoff and solos in Willies songs.
I didn't see the Matchbro, but they were being done on the Steel. There had to be a Matchbro there. Then the Steel switched back to Steel sounds. Then Back to "Dobro".
Sounded great.

Kevin Denny really impressed me ,sounds a little like Kieth Whitley and thats good.Very good show, weakest part is that dippy host who is trying to impress us with her Opry knowlege. She doesn't have accurate cue cards or they must be small.Porter should stay off and let the featured guest shine..He is too weak to upstage but he sure did good to let Leon Rhodes show he still has it and more.

I must agree with my friend John Steele on this. I had no problem with the backing musicians but the vocals of the three legends were sadly lacking in pitch quality. My wife who seldom comments on country music let out a shout of disbelief when Charlie Pride tried to hit the chorus of Kaliga and came up flatter than a Firestone. While we can all disagree about the show I have a question for all who posted on this thread. If you were trying to convince someone to try country music who had never heard it would you send them a tape of this?
I do not think so. Peter |

At the 97 Steel Convention in St Louis I asked why Speedy West no longer played the convention. They said he had very bad arthritis in his hands and could no longer perform. Now can somebody please tell me the difference between his situation and a vocalist who can no longer hold pitch but continues to perform off the prestige of the reputation from their younger years. My point is simply this. Porter no longer even has the limited control he used to have that made him a decent if not exciting singer who was able to hold pitch. The last six or seven times he has been on the Opry he cannot even get close to what he used to do in the sixties and earlier. As for Bill Anderson he has lost nothing since he never had any real voice; his forte is writing great songs like City Lights and The Lord Knows I'm Drinking. I still say if you have lost the ability to what brought you to the dance you should exit gracefully like Speedy; who realized he could no longer perform as he wanted too and left us with the memory of a great steel player who lead the steel into the modern era |

I'd say that when people hear the "old-timers" sing on the Opry, they're hearing what they want to hear (or what they used to hear). They came to hear the singer who made that song famous and/or they want to hear somebody their age (or somebody who they listened to when they were younger) perform those older songs.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I could make the argument either way, I suppose. I guess it boils down to WHICH type of audience are they trying to appeal to with particular performers on the Opry.
They seem to have a good mix of both the old and the new.
Would those who came to hear the older stuff be as satisfied if some of the younger performers did those songs instead? Interesting question.
