I saw this blurb on a timeline of the Drifting Cowboys:
Jerry Rivers releases an album, "A New Frontier" (Little Darlin LD-4009/SLD-8009), with his band The Homesteaders.
I believe that the group cut a series of singles through 1967-1968 for Little Darlin' although that label would fold by 1970.
In the 1960's Jack Boles played guitar with the Homesteaders, while Jim Pierce the piano player has mentioned playing with the group for a short stint in 1969 when he first moved to Nashville.
By the early 1970s the group had or had members like Gordon Cash, Frank Evans,John Stacey and Gary Boggs. And they eventually became the road band for Jeanie C. Riley.
Anyone else know anything on this group?

I knew all those guys really well.I bought a 58 Tele from Jack Boles when he worked for Sho-Bud in the early 70's and John Stacey is my brother-in-law and a dam fine drummer. He and I have been friends since 1968.
Its been about 5 years since I last saw Jack Boles.Frank Evans and Gordan Cash no longer live in Nashville and you know Gary Boggs passed away last year.
Jeanie C. Riley hired the Homesteaders because she wanted a self contained band including a P.A. system. They were a good band. |

Jason,
I think the original group was comprised of Jack Boles, Jerry Rivers, and Floyd Robinson(Billy's brother), who played lead guitar. They used to play alot of military clubs. In 1965,I went out for one trip with them, playing bass. At that time, the trio was comprised of Boles, Rivers, and Frank Evans on lead.We played 3 clubs in Montana, were gone for about a week, and I made $75. |

Hi Earl, yeah I heard about Gary's passing, a shame. Wasn't it Gary on the the Hank Williams Jr and Friends album from the mid 1970s?
Gregg, wow thanks for that, you've given me an earlier perspective of the group, sounds like that was indeed the core trio.
Thanks guys. |
