A friend of mine and I can not agree on who played steel on the great George Morgan hit "I Overlooked An Orchid".
My friend and I played in a country music band in Wiesbaden, Germany in the early fifties and this was one of the tunes we played. WSM radio Nashville plays the very oldies on Saturday morning. Although we live about twenty-five miles apart we were both listening to this station this morning and heard this song. |

It was, indeed,Carl Smith and,it was, indeed,Billy Robinson. Johnny Seibert joined Carl shortly after. It was recorded in '49 or '50.

If they are playing a George Morgan version, I wonder if it's from an Album??
But, Carl Smith is the one that had the hit on it. |

We played the Carl Smith version a "jillion" times at the Wagonwheel in Waynesville, Missouri in 1950....our most requested song!(My non-pedal Fender triple did a pretty good job of duplicating the steel work on those Carl Smith records.) Another senior moment, it was Carl Smith we were listening to, not Geo Morgan. Great record, I still love it. |
