Great article by David Hamburger in the October issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine:
Under the heading "Land Slide - new slide sounds and techniques" he covers Canadian sliders/lap steelers Steve Dawson, Kevin Breit and Don Rooke.
Very interesting reading, and the main photo is a two page 'pinup' photo of Dawson's Neil Russell buildt Weissenborn-style guitar.

Cool, I'll be sure to check that out.
I saw Don Rooke at the Vancouver Folk Festival this summer. He plays with no fingerpicks and a lot of effects, including a lot of Ebow. His Kona looks nice but I wonder why he gigs with it considering that he's getting a VERY magnetic sound out of his Sunrise. He could probably get the same sound out of any old guitar.
He has some very interesting and cool sounds, but I thought his playing was only good--not great. He had a few good ideas, but maybe the venue--big outdoor festival type environment--wasn't right for his band's sound. It would probably work better in a more intimate setting, where it would be possible to get into the subtleties...

Good point. I don't know what Dawson sounds like live, but I was surprised to see he's using a Sunrise through various stomp boxes into a Fender amp, considering the beautiful acoustic sound he gets on record.
But that's probably food for another thread... |
