It's been years since I bought a guitar instructional video, but I've been getting really into Jerry Reed lately, and figgered I could use all the help I could get....

I picked up the Mel Bay video "Guitar Styles & Techniques of JR" as taught by Buster B. Jones. I'd never heard of this Jones guy before this, but now, after having watched the 1st half of the video, I'm a believer! His embellishments to "The Claw" made my jaw drop to the flaw (hawhawhaw!)! An absolutely fantastic player, completely reverential to Reed. Gotta get mo' o' his stuff.

I still haven't reached JR's mid-70's to today output, but I durn shore will by the end of the end of the week!

Can anyone recommend to me other players in this vein (funky country fingerstyle)?

Jerry Donahue has a nice take on that style mixed with a Celtic flavor. Also check out some of the earlier Thumbs Carlille solo stuff-of course you can't pick up a damn thing from that guy.Another great video is the Tuck Andress fingerstyle video. He's more of an R&B/jazz dude but he's REAL funky and the techniques he teaches could apply to any style.

Michael is right on the money. Jerry Donahue with the Hellecasters is a Reed fan for sure! On their first album, (The Return of the Hellecasters,) Jerry did a medley of "The Beak" (one of his own I think) and Reed's "The Claw". The boy can out right pick! Lots of open strings and chromatic licks. Monster player!

Check out Paul Franklin's salute to Jerry Reed: http://www.paul-franklin.com/nothin.ram

Brent Mason also gives a lot of credit for Jerry's influence on his playing. He does a tune called, "Rule of Thumb" on his "Hot Wired" as a tribute.

Awesome! thanks for all the help & suggestions, folks! dare I ask for more still? I'm on a mission, you see...

also, I'm assuming that Jerry came up with this style all on his ownsome, probably most influenced by keyboard players (ray charles in particular), and chet atkins, of course; am I correct in this assumption? my musical knowledge is good, but not vast; were there any precedents for this guy?

he's got thumbthing thpecial...

Hey How........
Brent Mason has a Hot Licks video course which is top notch and a must have for finger stylists. He covers Jerry Reed in the one too! This guy is one awesome picker.......

Believe it or not, Eric Johnson has an instructional video that devotes a lot of time to the Jerry Reed style. I've only heard about it but friends have told me that it is goog. I wish I knew the title but it's probably a Hot Licks Video.
