I've always heard it as Webb Pierce. I just found it archived on COWPIE, and apparently Bobby Edwards (along with Mildred Imes,
Fred Henley & Terry Fell) is the songwriter. Did he also record it?

Bob,
George is right! Bobby Edwards had the hit record of the song. I don't ever recall a recording by Webb Pierce of it.

For a moment there I thought he was looking for "You're The Reason Our Kids Is Ugly" by Loretta and Conway.

Yes, it was Bobby Edwards that had the original hit. I think his style and sound were copied by Sonny James, who had a lot of his own hit records. |

I think that those words and chords at Cowpie are sort of wrong. At least, they're different from the way I learned it. |

Since Eddie Cochrane was mentioned...
There's a thread about what Buddy Holly would have done had he lived - I always felt that of all of the "rock-n-roll" stars, Eddie Cochrane was the one with the greatest potential - songwriter, singer, guitarist, producer... I have read somewhere (for what THAT's worth ) that Eddie Cochrane was the only one Elvis felt was any real competition for him. Which way he would have gone - country, rock, MOR - we'll never know...
