I had the privilege of seeing James Brown and his very hot band last night at the Ottawa Blues Festival.
Man, I don't know how old J.B. is, but the guy puts out an amazing show.
4 horns, 4 backup singers, in addition to drums, bass, keys, hammond organ, and two guitarists.
He hit the stage hard, and kept the audience hopping for more than an hour and a half steady. James is obviously also the bandleader; he cued them in, cued them out, gave them all the tempos....
I don't own one James Brown record, but I couldn't pass up the chance to see the Godfather Of Soul live.
Now I know why they call him "The hardest working man in show business". He has my respect !
And, besides all that... today, I feel good!

it's good to know that JB is still goin' on strong ! how old do you think he is ?
Maceo Parker plays often in Europe and he's a gas ! ( smaller band though...)
if poppa had a brand new bag he'd have a Steel on stage ! come on JB...

| The Godfather of Soul is 68 years young. I have seen him twice, and can't imagine a band being any tighter. I'm nowhere near his age, but just thinking about trying his moves breaks me into a cold sweat. |

Hi,
I had the pleasure of seeing JB and the Fabulous Flames years ago in Dallas while I was still in college. A buddy of mine and me and our two dates went to the show. We were the only pale dudes in the entire place and nobody cared.
He was unbelievable.
Question does the drummer still "shroud" him like in years gone by?

Glad to hear it.
I was pleased recently when James came to Cincinnati on very short notice to perform at a festival that some black bands were boycotting as a result of the recent political unrest regarding police shootings.
I won’t go into the details or offer my opinions on the underlying political issues. That’s not the point here.
James was dissed a bit for "crossing the picket line", so to speak, and also for only singing 1 or 2 songs before hurrying off to keep his previous schedule commitment(s). All of that misses the point. James came to Cincinnati out of gratitude and concern for ALL the people. His recording career started here.
I’m glad to hear he was well received up yonder.

Mark, yes... lots of theatrics. The band hit like a hammer though, and James was sounding fine. It was, all around, one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Tonight, Wilson Pickett. Tomorrow night, Little Feat. What a week.
I'm dog-tired, but I just don't care...
And the Jazz festival hasn't even started yet. Pray for me.
