J.D.Standlee is a name I've never seen discussed on the Forum. I place him with the early WS players like Bob Dunn. It sounds to me like he's playing a straight major tuning like A high-bass. The little I've heard of him really impressed me. I think his break on 'When My Baby Comes To Town' with the Modern Mountaineers shows him to be one of the best of his time.
What happened to him later? Did he start playing 6th tunings &c. like Dunn, and if so, did he keep up the 'trumpet' style as well as Dunn seemed to, or drop it like everyone else ? Don't know if people know what I mean, but Bob Dunn at his best, early Noel Boggs (like with Hank Penny's Radio Cowboys)and quite a few other pre WWII players, JD included, had a style that seemed more to do with N.O.jazz than 'Swing' as such. It seemed more brass than reed influenced than the post war players, who were much slicker, of course, but had lost some of the funkiness of the pre-war players.
I guess it was partly to do with the way the music biz was evovlving too.
Any further inf. on Standlee, including standout trax, or discussion on the style question appreciated.
