First smug person that gloats about their non-electric instrument gets smacked down.

C'mon, Jon; that's why God invented the portable generator!
Seriously, I hope everyone affected by the blackout stays safe and healthy ... and is back playing -- with amplification -- soon. |

Your problem will be solved!
We had a similar situation in Jacksonville one summer a few years ago, but on a small scale...only about 6 hours. So I was bored, hot, and it was pitch dark. I grabbed my regal resonator and a candle, and sat out on the back porch to get what little breeze I could on a muggy summer night.
Well, I lost track of time and before I knew it, all the lights popped back on. But I enjoyed it so much, that I went inside, turned all the lights off, and continued my candlight evening out on the porch! "...ahhh...so this, is what they did back in the old days!"
(old = pre-internet = the before time)

I saw a few battery powered street musicians working the crowds all around town last night in NYC, here and there on T.V. Boy, I would have cleaned up if I had been in NYC last night! Peavy Solo amps are the best, most affordable battery powered amps on the market IMHO. I have even seen them used alot in Europe by street artists. Do a search on "Busking" and you'll see what I mean. I'm having to go back to busking with a resonator because of all the downtown construction lately which took away my primo spot. I got a noise complaint last week from an unknown hotel and was forced to shut down by the cops. The resonator can't compete with downtown traffic and doesn't make as much tips as the electric, which I love to busk with. Also, the resonator takes alot more out of you, alot faster just trying to be heard. It's like 4 hours on resonator and harp verses 8 or 10 on electric. F..L..U..S..H......the prettiest sound in the English language.
Thanks for the well-wishing. In truth I have nothing at all to complain about. Personal inconvenience was minimal. Thinking of the poor souls stuck in the subways and elevators etc....eeep!
When I first heard rumors that the problem was Canadian in origin I was ready to get on the phone and tell Geo W. to invade Canadia wherever that is but my phone was out. It now appears that Ohio is going to need to be bombed. |

We need to build more power plants. Yesterday's power outage is just a reminder that our power grid is not adequate for a growing population.
Jesse, that's an interesting observation about the fatigue in trying to play 'loud' on an acoustic. Even another reminder of just how much we become dependant and accustomed to having electricity to assist us in our everyday lives. |

Now I understand! You simply take the Cross Bronx Expressway to the George Washington Bridge, drive past Stamfordia, Bridgeportia, Hartfordia, Bostonia, and Bangor, Mainia and you'll eventually hit Canadia. |

Unless you are talking about government compulsory conservation, it won't work. Eventually more means of producing power must be constructed.
I did put a new set of strings on the reso, just in case. And brushed off the dust on the old Pignose. BayGen ought to make a windup guitar amp. |

Magnetic P/Us are really just tiny electrical generators. If we were to wire up all the lap steels in the country and play them at the same time......?

I was playing my Dobro last night while the East Coast was dark.
The one thing I did notice was how fast my dialup internet was running last night with fifty million East Coast folks not on line, that was the fastest connection I have ever had.
I would like to thank each and every one of you, that were offline last night, and maybe someday I can return the favor. |

Well it seems to be getting back together and that means the beer will be cold when I get there next week.
You can put the Apple in the dark, but you can't put it to sleep!!
I will be doing a wedding tonight so far out in the hills that we will have 2 generators running for the band. There ain't no juice out thar.
The Sho-Bud will be fine on 1.6KW. |
