I stumbled across this website. There are quite a few Hawaiian albums for sale....each with a picture. Lots of great non-pedal steel on some of these gems. I enjoy looking at the different artwork on the LP covers, too!

What a cool site. I collect '50's "babe" album covers, and most of them are Hawaiin. Instead of crown molding in my home studio, I use the album covers. |

That's one thing that vinyl will always have over a CD...those cool vintage covers...large art work...full of color and vibrance! |

Nice cover art and steel playing on Guitare Hawaïenne Authentique. I found a website with samples of all the tunes. Do you know who the steel player is on that album? I'm thinking Billy Hew Len but could be way off..

La Guitare Hawaïenne's steeler sounds like he comes from the Indonesian/Dutch school. Could be Rudi Wairata but not really as good as other Wairata playing I've heard.
Any info on who played steel in the "Kailua Trio"?
Thanks
Bill

I don't know who it was ? Only info was the group name ... Trio Kailua.
The site says they were recorded in Paris .... Vol 1 in 1989 and Vol 2 in 1991.
I had the album (vol 1) sittin' on top of the stack when I met my mother-in-law for the first time. I make good first impressions

One of my favorite LP covers (although it's not Hawaiian) is Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass: "Whipped Cream and Other Delights."
If I had that waiting at home, I'd never have left the house!

Volume 1
Playasound PS 65027 is NOT trio Kailua...It IS Hawaiian Trio & Takiti with Jules Ah See and originaly issued in 1988 but must be before 1960.
Vol 2 PS 65081 is Trio Kailua with Jack Thierry on Hawaiian Guitar (a pupil of Gino Bordin and then Harry Hougassian)

No wonder they were "very good records" ...
And now I know why I was partial to Vol 1 (besides the picture being better) ...
I had bought both at Specs Music in the Palm Beach Mall (Vol 1 in '90 and 2 in '92) ...
Thanks .. [This message was edited by Rick Aiello on 16 August 2003 at 08:48 AM.] |
