Here is somebody's list of the top 365 Songs of the Century. (Of course, I put no stock in it at all, since "Louie Louie" didn't even make it into the top 50!)

(Sorry for the long list, but somehow I can't get the link to work)

Well Jim,
I don't take much stock in the selection either. It seems odd to me that the number one all time country song ever(as iI remember, being voted by a public vote),"He stopped loving her today", by George "Possum" Jones was mired all the way down in 336th place. Just goes to show I reckon,,,, it"s just like the STEEL, depends on who's doin' the pickin'. Anyway thanks for the post. It was interesting reading!

Well there's a dozen or two in there that I'd probably throw out and replace with others, but overall it's not a bad representation of what I'd consider some of the top songs of the century. BTW, I may have missed it, but I didn't notice Jimmie Rodgers' "Waitin' For a Train" listed. That's an absolute must IMHO.

I think a more appropriate title to the list would be "recordings of the century" rather than "songs of the century." If I'm not mistaken some of the "songs" on that list were written before the year 1901.

How could they possibly leave off the greatest song ever written- Surfin' Bird? It didn't even make the list.

Oh well a bird bird bird, bird is a word....

If there's a song of the century, it' Highway to hell. Nobody with a sense for great songwriting would honestly doubt it.

Oh yes, "Highway to Hell." I especially like the lyrics to that song. Let me see if I can remember . . . . . .

"I'm on a highway to hell,
a highway to hell,
a highway to hell,
a highway to hell,
a highway to hell,
(ad nauseum)

(final line)
a highway to hell . . . . ARRRRRRGHHGHGGH!!"

But all kidding aside, I think I probably agree with #1.

This is old news, Cohen. Topic was posted, raised, and thoroughly evaluated last week by the pundits over on Off-Topic. Get with the program, will ya?

I thought I'd try it with "civilized company", Steve. I see you swing both ways?

A 365 tune list and no Sleepwalk? I don't think so, I don't think I have ever gone 2 or 3 weeks without hearing it at least once.
That list is so bogus! Achy, Breaky heart my @$$.

I liked that list in general but I have to agree with Achy Breaky Heart not belonging. I actually got P.O.'d when I saw that song on there. I had to sink as low as to do that P.O.S. (against my will, but by the will of folks stuffing my request tip jar) when I was doing a midi solo thing in the early 90's (singing my way through college). How embarrasing
Give me #13 any day!
Also... I didn't see "Booger Man" by Bobby Garritt on there... what gives?!

Alright, I'll give you the one that really bugged me:

#80: Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

#84: What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

Here's my test.

Admittedly, I didn't go all the way through the list. But out of all of these, how many will you hear 10 years from now?
20 years?
50 years?

Probably not many, but probably #1 and #2. Maybe some of the Beatles stuff.
Maybe a couple of the popular country things (Friends in Low Places?).
Anything else from the '80s or '90s? Probably not.

That's why for the most part I gave up on rock music starting about 1990. Most of what was popular just seemed to be second rate to my tastes. Interestingly enough, about that time country also seemed to "change" and go back to a more traditional style and sound. Less orchestration (one big reason I didn't like a lot of the '70's and '80's country). So I started listening to a little more country.

It seemed like in the olden days, when a guy and a girl were a courtin' there would always be one special song that they adopted as "their song". Even as late as the '80s there were still some that could suffice.

What are today's kids going to pick as "their song"? Cop Killer? Something with Alanis Morrisette blurting out four letter words?

I was a little surprised that they credit "The Girl From Ipanema" to Stan Getz....
Bizarre. I'm almost positive without looking it up that Jobim wrote that. *shrug*

Perhaps they were thinking of "The Girl With Emphysema"?
-John
edit: ok, duh. I get it now.. they're talking about the recording that made it famous, not the composer. My mistake... I'll go back to sleep now.
