I was informed that Napster can upload/download files from your computer withour your knowledge, but only if you are on a cable connection. Being on a cable connection you have a limited download amount and after the limit you are charged for the extra downloads. Is this true????
Thanks..Joe Maybe this should be in the computer section, if so please move it.

Not quite true. Napster can upload and download mp3 files (only) from your computer (and even over a telephone modem, not just on a cable line) but ONLY if you are a willing participant in Napster and have downloaded their software, and have it turned on, and have some mp3 files put in the Napster directory where you are willingly offering them for sharing. If you do all these things, Napster might be uploading one of these mp3 files without your knowledge, but it would not Download a file to your hard-drive unless you have searched for that file and ASKED for it to be downloaded.

There are lots of important legal concerns about Napster, but it is not the scary computer-boogie man that you may fear, adding and subtracting files willy-nilly.

Making you an (unwitting ?) distributor of copyrighted music. With no way of knowing if who you distributed it to owns the rights to play it. A scary thought.

Unwitting? hmm.
If you load a revolver, point it at your foot and pull the trigger, you have just unwittingly shot your foot off.

No, John, one would have just dim-wittingly shot their foot off!

It's about the only argument one caught providing MP3 files for upload via Napter could really use.

Not a very good argument, though.
