Who had the original hit?

I think Tex Ritter and Tex Williams both had versions of this recitation.. but I don't believe they had the first hit.

Anybody know?... JY

I have it on an old 10" Capitol album by Tex Ritter.but T.Texas Tyler wrote it. I,also, have a sequel by T.Tx.Tyler on 4 Star records entitled,"The Soldier's Prayer Book",written by "V.F.Stewart". It's a medium-tempo vocal,"spin-off" of the original. Guess they thought they could "cash in" twice.

Pee Wee King used to do it on his live shows.I also have it on a record by him.
Bill Anderson also has a whisperin version of it.
