I believe Johnny Darrell had the first recording of "Green Green Grass of Home". His recording of "With Pen In Hand" was great!

Besides "Green Green Grass of Home", Johnny Darrell had the first releases on "Ruby,Don't Take Your Love to Town", "With Pen in Hand",and "The Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp." Johnny once told a friend of mine that he cut the most expensive "demos" in Nashville!
"Laura" was recorded by Leon Ashley, who was married to Margie Singleton. |

Ben Keith used to play pedal steel for Johnny Darrell before he went with Ian & Sylvia's Great Speckled Bird and Neil young's Stray Gator in the early 1970's.
He also cut a cross-over LP in 1969 {issued 1970} in LA using LA songwriters and pickers, mostly sinder songwriter types and country rock pickers like Clarence White and Ry Cooder. |

Johnny's one of my all time favorites! How about "Why ya been gone so long?" written by Mickey Newberry and "River Bottom" penned by Billy Ed Wheeler"?
