I have that Gary Stewart album on vinyl and recently obtained the CD. Great album, but you're right to laugh at their picks. In addition to "Out of Hand", the album also contains "Drinkin' Thing", and "She's Acting Single, I'm Drinkin' Doubles". Those are the real country tunes, add "Back Slider's Wine"...
I heard that Gary really dove deep into the drug scene. That would explain his failure to live up to all that "promise".
Strangely enough, I think the one Tommy Overstreet record I own is the one you linked us to.

Actually Ron, I ment that Gary Stewart did become successful and still is talked about often for his classic cuts. It's just intrigueing to read a review that comes out before an artist makes that rise to the top.
When i first discovered Country music, all i listened to was Gary Stewart, George Jones, John Anderson, Strait, Skaggs, a few others. But mostly Gary Stewart. |

I have three of Gary Stewert's tape's .
Yea I think he sing a great country song.
The song Elvis song,ONE NIGHT WITH YOU you would have never made me think anyone else could touch that song,But when I heard Gary Stewart's ,honky tonk way of singing it,It sounded great.
Alot of good Singers in this world that just need to be heard?

Hey Smiley;I used to run with T.O. when he lived in El Paso.Him and his dad owned a United Van Lines franchise,moving furniture.We bowled a lot together.I was playing bass in a little band there.He knew I was a musician but he never mentioned he had any interest in it at all.Then out of a clear blue sky he told me he was moving to Huston to do a single at the Hilton Hotel,I asked hi what he ment and said DOT Label signed him to A recording contract and also writing.Well I guess the rest is history.I haven't talked to him in 30 years,but if you see him tell him hey for me but he probally wont remember me.
They found him because the song he wrote was I think called The Mexican Cricket,an instrumental.He whistled it on a tape sent it to Dot and I think it was Herb Alpert that recorded it.Ray[This message was edited by Ray Jenkins on 30 June 2000 at 07:51 AM.] |
