He used to perform on the WLS Barndance in Chicago in the 60's. My uncle was once associated with him in some capacity, but my uncle is deceased, so I can't ask him. The last time I heard his name mentioned was during a '92 broadcast of the 'Opry. Roy Acuff mentioned him as the man doing the voice-over for a Dollar General Store commercial that had just finished; I'm guessing it was the same Jack Barlow I'm thinking of. I have a couple of his singles from the early '60's, and one album from the mid'70's, on the Dot label. I believe he was from Fruitland, IA, near Muscatine, and a heck of a singer. Just wondered if anyone else was familiar with him. |

I met Jack Barlow in Nashville about 25 years ago. This was during the period when his Big Red chewing gum TV commercial was running nationally. For some reason, I was under the impression that he was either from, or living in, Peoria, Il. at the time. He had a great voice. Don't know what ever became of him though.

Now that you mention it, the info on the Dot album I have said he had a farm in Dixon County, Kentucky; I'm not very familiar with Kentucky, so this doesn't tell me much. I never realized he frequented the Peoria area.
Thanks for the response, George. P.S., I'm just north of you, near the Wisconsin border. |
