A new station has come on-air here in the Seattle market. I don't even know the call letters because all they play are classic country hits. Very little DJ jabber and I have yet to hear a news cast. The only advertising I remember hearing is for themselves. All I know is that it is AM 1090. That's really all I need to know.

If I try to trace the shift of Country Music to pop oriented production, I come up with a time line that relates directly to the rise of FM radio and the relegation of AM to talk, sports and religion. I have rediscovered that Country Music sounds great on AM. Over compressed, Lo-Fidelity, fades in and out, effeced by power lines and all. It still sounds the way I remember it. Like a time machine in my car. All the great old music was mixed for AM. I'm not kidding, I love it.

We've got a station here in Southern Virginia on 1490 AM which plays traditional country 24 hours a day and I love it. It's in Newport News/Hampton area and believe it or not, you can call the station to request a song and the DJ actually answers the phone and he'll look on their computer for you while you wait and if they have it it's on next. The DJ's don't have any set play list, they just wing it like in the good old days. The morning guy (9-12) is a very good local musician named Jerry Lee Scott who works a club here every Friday and Saturday night with his own band and is a Haggard freak! I'm in Heaven because now I can drive down the highway listening to Merle, Buck, and those guys without having to play my tapes!

Everyone.....can these AM stations be accessed via computski? I know you can get FM stations on computski from all over the country. I was listening to one station
from Springfield, MO, and it came in better on the PC, than my local FM stations right around me.
It sure would be great to listen to these AM stations. Can the PC pick them up?

One reason that AM stations have that 'sound'
is because when you are making a master tape in a recording studio for an LP or CD, the
engineers and techs when listening back to what you have done, not only listen thru hi
fidelity speakers, but also one little 5" or
6" speaker, so as to mimic a speaker in a car
or small home radio. They want to see how the sound sounds coming out of that little speaker. I believe this is where compression comes in. Everything has to sound just right
coming out of that small speaker. I guess they figure on a daily basis, that more music is heard thru smaller speakers than
really large expensive stereo systems...you
know...people in their cars, elevators, grocery stores etc.

We also have an AM station that plays mostly 50's & 60's music. On Sat afternoon one of the DJ's plays all those "golden country classics" for 3 hrs. The call letters are KDAV and can be found on the "net" at www.KDAV.com They get a lot of requests from our friends in England , Australia and Germany.

BD, if you're in the Seattle area, check out Jim Hilmar's "Frettin' Fingers", on KSER-FM, Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
>
I'll put up the KSER link, and one for his
"Meet the Writers" bio, from Vintage Guitar Magazine.

Well I checked out the above stations; I'm listening as I type to KTTS in Spfld. MO.
Ironically, the 2nd they played just after tuning in was CHEROKEE FIDDLE [w/Sneaky Pete], the very next topic under this one on
Country Music Homepage.
Graham....I like this station a little better than KVOO. KTTS is playing a lot of what I like and haven't strayed yet.
However, KVOO started off with yet another
overplayed song by ALABLAMA.
Skip, KDAV.....couldn't get thru to this station. Flag said "only HTTP & mms urls
are supported".

Now KTTS is playing M.M. Murphy's "What's
Forever For". They play a lot of Waylon,
Willy, and Merle.

These stations are still a far cry better than what I can get around here.
Thanks again.....Chips Ahoy

WE've got a great Classic Country station here in central Minnesota, KVAL. They play some great stuff and based on the reaction they've had for the yera they've been on the air, there's quite a few of us listening.

Oops, forgot to mention, KSER does have an internet feed. Anyone who loves the type of music with PSG / Lead (takeoff?) guitar interaction such as Bryant/West and Leons McAuliffe and Rhodes in the Texas Troubadours (I hope I got the Leons names right, can't check it out right now) should give "Frettin Fingers" a listen.
It's on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, PST
