Having used plastic fingerpicks since I got my first acoustic lap steel (I used to play barefingered on electric lap and regular guitar), I am getting a little tired of the plastic picks slipping as soon as my fingers start to sweat, so I figured I would try some metal picks.

So, enlighten me please,- what's the difference between brass and nickel picks?
Is there any noticable difference to tone, volume, feel?

I've played brass and nickel on banjo for nearly 20 years and could never tell any difference in tone. My experience on dobro and steel is significantly smaller but still I can't hear any difference. The brass ones to tarnish fasther but that's easy to fix.

For my ears, the brass picks sound a little deeper & fuller than the nickel picks. My preference for years has been Dunlop 0.025" for PSG, Dobro, and lap steel.

Chuck Brattain has "Red Rajah Picks" ... hard powder-coated fingerpicks. Non-slip, lowest friction ... really great. He sent me some when he repaired a bar ... I think he also sells 'em now. Rajah Picks Scroll down to bottom

I'm a fan of plastic fingerpicks though. For me, the attack is very similar to my thumbpick ... more seamless transitions.

When I boil 'em up initially, I set them tight. If a pair gets too slippery ... reboil and tighten or carve x's to the fingertipside with an Exacto.

I have some "sharpened" plastic ones ... and some fat ones. It's nice to be able to shape them.

I do keep some Dunlop metal ones around ... for a crisper sound I like the thin gauge ... 0.015 & 0.018
