I found out today Willie Nelson will be honored with a lifetime achevment award from the Grammy's. Also awarded Mitch Miller (Mr Sing Along): i'm thinking of all the country material he had rerecorded for pop audiences.

Kris Kristoferson was quoted as saying that in the history of American music... Willie Nelson is the Stephen Foster of our day....

I would have to agree that Willie will be remembered as one of The Great American songwriters...

"Willie Nelson is the Stephen Foster of our day." ??? I mean no disrespect, but I don't understand that quote at all. I don't get the connection, other than that they are both songwriters.

Two Similar Crimes, Two Different Outcomes Dept.

Ray Price, snitched upon by a disgruntled employee, was busted for pot in his car, paid $500 fine, a basic handslap for the Pricester.

Willie Nelson, busted for pot in his car, played golf the next weekend with the Sheriff of the county of his arrest, and the arresting officer was either disciplined or removed from the force for conducting an "unwarranted search" without probable cause.

My take on the matter: Ray Price is hip, Willie Nelson is very hip.

Stephen Foster....

"My Old Kentucky Home" most likely the greatest country song ever written...

"Oh Suzanna"... etc...

yes he was pop writer.. but he did cross over to country occasionally

Yes, I see that they are both country songwriters, but Stephen Foster's songs are embedded in the national psyche. They are way beyond "crossover". I don't see any hint that Willie's songs will ever reach that level. That's why the quote puzzled me.

I'm right there with you Steve--"Half A Man" still kills me every time. I wonder just how many songs there are recorded of his??? Great quote from Tom T. Would love to hear a Roger Miller quote on his songwriting.

Only in America can you go from bum to hero. When I was in Nashville Willie left for Austin but only because he was not welcome at the time in Nashville (when you show up - if you show up - and your in no condition to perform even Nashville has it's limits).
Willie has written a couple of standards, including Funny How Time Slips Away, but a lifetime achievement award?? Gimme a break.

Willie and Jerry Jeff were the guys who got me into Country music in the first place. When Walker was sober, I thought his shows and albums were better, but that wasn't very often and he wasn't around very long. I think Willie surely meets the requirements for a lifetime award-and deserves it as well. He's a real survivor, and he's produced hits in a lot of different eras.

b0b-you wanna talk"embedded in the national psyche"?Ever hear of a little number called"Crazy"?How many girl singers does it take to sing"Crazy"?Evidently all of them...besides-Stephen Foster was a very bad man...he wrote that awful"Dixie"song.

"Crazy" is a great tune, but songs like "Dixie" and "Oh Suzanna" are in a whole 'nuther league. Willie Nelson's songs are only known by people who listen to country music. Foster's tunes are known by people who don't even listen to music. They are taught as sing-alongs in kindergarden.

I think Kris was talking about the beard thing.

Well... I would agree that Kristofferson may have been exaggerating... more then a bit there..

Actually I doubt there can ever be another Stephen Foster.... it goes with the times..

But I would agree that Willie deserves his life time achievement award....

just look at the string of material he has written... and how those songs have made a big impact on the music scene here in the second half of the 20th century...

Many of those songs crossed over..... and have been covered and recorded by hundreds of artists.

The material speaks for itself...

Willie also helped to expand the audience of country music....

Congrats Willie...........

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on Willie,b0b.I will say that many artists in ALL fields of music have recorded Willie's songs.."Night Life"(Jack Jones,B.B.King,etc)"Crazy"(Linda Ronstadt,Patsy Cline etc.)"Funny How Time Slips Away"(Brook Benton,Dean Martin, etc.)just to name a few.Granted,no "Dixies","Camptown Races",in there, but you gotta admit,Willie's tunes are a lot more politically correct...

Trying to compare Stephen Foster to Willie Nelson is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are songwriters, but that's the end of the similarities. Stehen Foster's songs, although incorrect in our current times, are treasured more for the historical value, and generally treated that way in schools.
Willie Nelson on the other hand is a more contemporary songwriter and he and his songs place in history are yet to be determined.

With today's standards for qualification, it would seem there really isn't any standards. There are a lot of more prolific songwriters with many more hits (such as Harlan Howard) - if that's the criteria that makes him qualified for the award.

While songwriting is by no doubt a strong part of the criteria for the Lifetime Achievement Award, it is not only based on that. He has had a truly amazing career.

As for people outside country music not knowing his music, I would be willing to bet if you polled a whole bunch of non-country fans and asked them to name some country songs, "Crazy" and "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" would be on almost everyones list (or for that matter, to "name" a country artist--his name would be there, too).

He is very hip.

I gotta go dig up "Half a Man" and listen again.

I think his acoustic with that extra hole in it deserves a lifetime achievement award. It has certainly served above and beyond the call.

Willie Nelson is more than deserving of a Lifetime Achievement Award.

He bucked the Nashville establishment who didn't really have respect or faith in his ability as a singer way back then... He is a great songwriter and performer. He is a co-founder of Live Aid. He is respected and loved by his peers. Who else has done duets with Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Sinead O'Connor, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Julio Iglesias, Waylon Jennings, Leon Russell, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, David Allen Coe, and Ray Charles? He has written hundreds of songs, yet he is a great interpreters of other artists' material: The Eagles, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, John Hiatt, Hoagy Carmichael, Steve Goodman, Irving Berlin, Gregg Allman, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Mike Reid, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Johnny Bush, Jimmy Webb, and many others.

His guitar playing is like nobody else's and is quite recognizable. I just think there is nobody out there like Willie. He is one of a kind. He deserves this award.

If Willie Nelson hadn't written "Nightlife," we would have never been able to hear Jimmy Day PLAY it. That's worth an award right there.

I'm not a big fan, but I got to admit he has embedded himself as a National Character. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who would not know who he is regardless of whether they are Country fans or not.

As far as comparing him to Stephen Foster, it's kind of like trying to compare Stephen King to Mark Twain: They are/were both popular writers of their day, but none of us will be around for the 100 years it will take to see how the popularity holds up. But I'm willing to grant Kris Kristopherson a little hyperbole if he wants to pay tribute to his friend.
